Can an import be mapped for super unleaded only ?

i want a uk turbo, but cant find a good white one, so if i got a white import could i map it for super unleaded, this is why i want a uk one, so i dont have to worry which station i need to fill up at etc, can just use any place that sells super unleaded, see ??

is it possible ?

cheers.......

you can map any car to run on any fuel. although imports are mapped for 100 ron in japan when they get here everyone uses optimax and octane booster to get as close as possible to 100ron but once mapped can run any according to mapping 95/97 what ever you want!!!

hmm,NOW i find this out, i have been solely looking for a uk turbo but imprts can be mapped for super, which is, 97 RON ??

is this really true, or am i being wound up ??

The Rig 29 May 2006 11:25 PM

what price are we talking for a remap to super, how do they do it etc ?

Dill_typeR 29 May 2006 11:31 PM

It depends on the year of the car.

I own a 97 import and I use optimax and booster. Had it for 18 months and its still sweet.
I think (maybe wrong, not quite sure on exact year but) pre 99 cars can't be remapped, they need a new ECU, but post 99 imports can be remapped, using existing ECU

Its to do with advance/retarding ignition to your plugs, different RON fuels require varying amounts of ignition advance to stop detonation (where the fuel burns at the wrong point during the engine cycle leading to engine damage)

thats right.

ealrlier cars ecus cant be mapped you will need a piggy back ecu gems apexi power fc etc later cars 99 can have the tek3 map

The Rig 30 May 2006 12:17 AM

wot price are these ecus then ?

Delboy2 30 May 2006 12:20 AM

Pre 96 classics can be mapped ;) On the mainboard of the ECU there is a space provided for an 'additional' eprom which can be programmed with different map (some of the classic ECU's an eprom holder is already fitted)
All that is then required is to cut a link (J1) on the mainboard for the Eprom to be read rather than the onboard map ;)

Cheers

Delboy,is that a common way of doing it or a nice, home method ?

The Rig 30 May 2006 07:03 AM

who can i contact to see if i can get an import mapped for super ?

p1mark 30 May 2006 07:32 AM

You need to specify the MY of your car before anyone will advise, but basically any MY can be done, its just a matter of if its a map of your existing ECU (ecutek for MY99 on) or a piggyback or replacement ECU for earlier MY's.

The spec of the car would also help people advise.

Unless its an sti then I dont think you have any worries. I've been running a '93 WRX with standard super (even had 95 ron unleaded put in it when i first got it) for 18 months now, ive put 10k miles on the clock and its as good as the day I got it. I even upgraded the ECU to one with more aggresive timings and higher boost(from a '95 car) and still no problems on sainsbury's super at all.

If you are in doubt you can always get a scoobyecu or one of these and run on optimax without problem as thats what its mapped for:

I think Apexi also do a something called a power commander which can be plugged in to all models and be cusom mapped(cost about £500 I think).

Yes - fit an ECU from a UK classic, afaik the ECU codes are V7, 7D and 6D (this is for pre96 classics)

Cheers

p1mark 31 May 2006 05:58 AM

Yes you can run it on unleaded but it will have to be mapped for it.

Strongman im not sure Bob Rawle would appreciate you putting his personal mobile up on here!:Whatever_

The Rig 31 May 2006 06:53 AM

Would that work then, fitting an ecu from a uk into a wrx ?

i suppose a uk ecu is as rare as rocking horse poo !!

might be cheaper than a new ecu/remap on an my95 still tho !!

cheers.....
