Engine Rebuilds
 

hi guys,

my first post on here. just wnated to know whether the older scoobys needed an engine rebuild at 100,000 miles cos im looking at around 98/99/00 at the moment?

i might go see a couple tomorrow so any tips on what to look out for would be appreciated too.

Mine needed a rebuild at about 40k

i've got a my00turbo and mine being done now (87000miles)
i was told to look out for new radiators on 98/99/00 cars.if the car had a new rad ask if the head gaskets had been done.because sometime when the gasket goes on one side it can pressurise the water system and pop the bottom of a rusty rad if it not been changed.

A Subaru engine should last as long as any other engine as long as its maintained as its supposed to be.

A great many Subarus are thrashed to death by their owners and then sold onto some poor b@stard who doesnt know what they're looking at.

No they shouldn't need a rebuild at 100, 000 or even 150,000 if they have been driven sensibly and not modified.

My advice, but a standard one and preferably not from a teenager especially if there wearing a tracksuit and baseball cap

I have been driving for 7 years now and for the past 2/12 years of owning an impreza I have never broken down once, compared to the other 4 1/2 years subarus have been the most reliable cars I have ever owned.

The guy servicing my 03 WRX pointed out a little sticker under the bonnet to me last week. It states that the tappets and shims should be checked, reset or replaced as necessary at 100,000kms. This is an engine out and heads off job taking IRO 10 hours (work that out at main dealer rates :eek: ) and then the shims and followers (I think that's what he called them) are £56 each :eek: and there are 16 of them :eek2: i can see why no-one does this service :rolleyes: so if you're buying a high mileage Scoob listen for ticking sounds. it will either be a boost solenoid, or worse ;)

guys - thanks for all this. might buy from a dealer so i can get a warranty cos I dont really know what to look for when it comes to the small details.

will hopefully get something on a px for my banger too!

These engines go on forever if they are in the hands of those who have the money, time, knowledge and maturity to look after them properly.

As has been said above - do NOT buy off a BoyRacer, ESPECIALY one with student debts!! :eek:

Buy a one owner, UK car without mods and with full service history ... drive it sensibly and look after it ........ you should get 20 years and 200,000miles out of it.

Those who blow-up a Subaru engine would blow up ANY engine - they simply think they are driving something on the Playstation they grew up with ..... haven't got a clue!! :rolleyes:

Only quoting a well respected independent specialist who is used by several of the big power straightline runners in my area. I'm no expert and so rely on such people for info such as this, much like many take your word as gospel.

Is it possible you misunderstood???

If the engine is noisey or done a high mileage then checking the shims can be done and adjustments made. It is not done often as, once set, tolernces do not change. Checks can be done in situ but to re shim it is easier to have the engine out but the need for this on its own is quite rare.

Cam followers may cost £56 each but I cannot see why you would want to replace one (never mind 16)

You DO NOT take heads off to reshim them. Fact.

If my post was unclear then I apologise, but he inferred that they would be checked and adjusted, but if any needed replacement then it would require the engine to be out. He also stated that it is highly unlikely that more than one or two, if any, would ever need doing at 100,000k, but it is a possibility, and it is a service that I and many others have never heard of and could potentially be very expensive if the checking did prove that there was excess wear requiring replacement.
I certainly won't be doing it anyway, but only posted to make people aware of something that I certainly have never heard of. If my engine developed any symptoms of such failure then I would be more likely to source a new/different engine. I have heard that new 2.5l STi short blocks can be had for IRO £940+vat these days.

I would agree with Pete up to a point.

However, I would say while you could thrash, abuse, misuse, never change the oil in an old CHV engined escort and it would last you 90k (mine did). Try the same on a turbo impreza and you should expect problems.

If you manage to knacker a Subaru, you are driving it like a tw@t!!!

Just repeating stuff in my other post here, but I thought it might give a little reassurance.

UK MY99 (Dec 98 but 99 model)

163,000 miles and counting...

Had to replace the following since new:

50k - Oxygen sensor
80k - Clutch
145k - Radiator
155k - Exhaust

If the car has been looked after it shouldn't break I guess.
