How can you ID an STi engine

As above really gents, how can you tell what is what, is it just the red inlet manifold or is there specific differences.

Someone i know has told me they have an STi engine it in their car and i am not sure, car in question is a classic not sure of MY but it's older than a 99 cos that wot i got and it isn't the same as mine.

Only sure way is to take a cam cover off. an STI will have cams acting directly on the buckets and the shim hidden under the bucket.

Anyone can put a red STI manifold on a UK or WRX engine - the manifold is identical in every other way.

cool, cheers, so all it is then is under bucket shims and that will give it away, reason for asking is his engine is in bits and the bloke rebuilding it is under the impression that its a Sti engine, i didnt think it was

STi pistons as opposed to WRX pistons if it is in bits.

scoobysmiff 24 May 2006 04:40 PM

I dont know the difference m8, the pistons are not out it has just had the heads removed so far

The WRX has valve pockets in the top of the pistons. Bowl is 13.7 cc.
The STi has a squarish bowl but deeper, no valve pockets and 17 cc toal bowl or some similar figure.
