Metal prices

We are increasing all our prices by 10% in June because brass prices has gone through the roof.

Anybody else increasing their prices due to metal prices hitting the roof?

Miss Kinky 17 May 2006 04:46 PM

they said on the radio that the scrap value of a 2p coin is 3p due to price of copper going up

kingofturds 17 May 2006 04:47 PM

Them bloody Chinese using all our resources again:mad:

Jonathan Davies 17 May 2006 04:56 PM

London copper prices fell 9% yesterday... not sure the previous vertical climb will resume tbh. But maybe it will, macro pressures (eg China and India) are still there.

The price of metals, especially gold (which is very high at the moment) always increase when investers suspect the economy is looking uncertain, and assets such as housing are looking overpriced.

Money from shares and property has been moving in "safe havens" like gold recently, hence the price increases.

Nat 17 May 2006 05:55 PM

And the government sold all the countries Gold reserves a few years ago to invrest in currency instead  Well done Gordon.

Jonathan Davies 17 May 2006 06:01 PM

Gold is spiky now, but has been flat for donks. Bit harsh to judge the Treasury on that basis.

On the other hand, feck em.

There has been a huge increase in the price of zinc anodes, I work for a yacht chandlers, gone up from £18.25 to £39.95 for the MG Duff pear shaped ones. Due to china stock piling it. I shall imagine that people like my boss will invest, in buying crate loads of anodes this year as they expect the price of zinc to just keep rising.

Our paint supplier International has warned of huge price increases in anti-fouling becuase anti-fouling is a copper based paint and the price of copper is rocketing.

Fortunately for us we bought huge quantities of anifouling and very good prices at the beginning of the year, so should see us very competitive for the next two-three years.

This deal about 2p pieces only refers to ones before 1978 I believe as all 2p pieces since then are copper plated steel.

Did he really sell ALL of our gold reserves or just part of it. Its times like this that Maggies idea of shutting the mines doesnt look so bad after all.

Tim-Grove 17 May 2006 06:11 PM

Let’s hope it stays high. Weighed in some scrap cable from a job the other day and my local scrap yard were paying £3.50Kg for bright copper. Quids in:D:D

Nat 17 May 2006 06:11 PM

It was a fair cunuk of them. Gold has been going up in value ever since!

Most commodities tend to....

Nat 17 May 2006 06:26 PM

Even more of a silly idea then!

farmer1 17 May 2006 06:30 PM

Its only ever worth anything when you sell it though?

speye91 17 May 2006 06:39 PM

what do you do for a living mate? i make patterns for the foundry industry and some of the aluminium prices have gone up 33%:eek:not good if you've qouted something a year ago and now it's been given the go-ahead, only for them to **** themselves when you tell them about the increase. (and most times can't afford it:mad: )

what with china etc buying up all our scrap and making everything for fcuk all and the fuel/gas price increases my occupation is just about fcuked:(

short sighted government hasn't helped, which is hardly surprising!

Poor Guy 17 May 2006 06:50 PM

went to buy some 14 cable today for my car and they told me the price had gone up over a pound for 50m in 3months due to copper prices.

logiclee 17 May 2006 07:24 PM

Why we now have four security guards on site as our Gypo friends keep steeling our cable and brass cable joints.

Cheers
Lee

Do you think most of the worlds metals are mined in the UK?

I design architectural hardware for a well known company within the trade. You won't find our products in B&Q ;)

We also own a foundry and brass CNC turned parts company so we feeling the pain throughout the group.

I want our company to buy a RP machine. that would put our pattern maker out of business :D

It's more recent than that... I think it was about 1992 they moved to copper plated steel.

I'll have to go and weigh in some of my jar of copper coins :D

John.

Would not bother mate i think you needed about 145k worth of 2p's to get a tonne , and you would only get about 3.5k for a tonne:(

But 2p coins don't have significant copper content any more. Prior to 1992 they were made of bronze, but since then they've been made of copper-plated steel. The plating is probably about 10 microns thick, so the amount of copper used is minimal.

Anyone know what the scrap value is of aluminium at the moment?
Just that I have a fireblade m/c frame to get rid of:)

speye91 17 May 2006 11:26 PM

Aliminium is good at the minute mate, a decent scrappy may give you about £3.60 per kilo

InvisibleMan 17 May 2006 11:29 PM

Why can't you inadvertently hook the other end up to a power staion and do the community a service?
