Can a clutch be fitted wrongly?

I've just killed my clutch, which i fitted myself during an engine conversion.
What i want to know is could the failure be due to incorrect fitment? The centre just ripped appart,in a big way!

Cheers Tim

as long as the plate is in the correct way round then there's not a lot to get wrong??

what type was it and what spec are you running?? how did you do it??

It was an exeedy unit, fitted on a 2.5 conversion running about 365bhp.
I had my foot down in 3rd,and it just went!
Can the plate be fitted the wrong way round,as it seemed it would foul the flywheel if fitted backwards.

what is the condition of the spiggot bearing inside the flywheel? was it juddering at all

I have noticed that the bearing is very notchy now,it was new when the clutch/lightened flywheel was fitted and was very smooth when fitted.

Can you post some bigger pic's, it's not exactly easy to see much detail.

was it a std replacement type or an proper "organic" kit??

to do that damage can't see the spiggot bearing having any fault to cause that failure.............

Has the friction plate welded itself to the cover ? Or is what's left of it loose ?

It's the torque that breaks them, not the BHP.

Timothy Morphy 08 May 2006 01:01 PM

It def was an exeedy organic clutch, from an official dealer, costing £300. The plate hasn't welded itself to the cover, but wedged itself into the outer springs.
Im not totally sure of the power but as said it's probably the torque that finnished it off,it lookes like the centre just sheared off! The 2.5 pulls much harder than the 2.0 in any gear!
Im hoping the ap 6 paddle clutch i've got on order will hold up. :wonder:

You're absolutely right of course, i only mentioned the bhp cause he didn't quote this torque figures! I'm guessing pretty high though!! ;) :D
