MY VIEWS ON A MY MY06STi2.0JDM

Oringinally I was after a MY03-4 Spec C but ended up getting a second hand MY06 STi 2.0L JDM with 1700m on the clock. The only mods was it had already been remapped for UK fuel and running 322bhp.

I had it for approx 1 month now and I thought i would pass on my views so far.

Day 1

Handling.

I had the T25 suspension fitted and handling was an absolute dream. I ran with 1 "Click" front and rear and the car still resists body roll yet was still comfortable on my local "A" roads (Which are very bumpy & pot holes more like "B's") I am now running 3 rear and 5 Front and finding it a good comprimise. When travelling alone i have 7 front and 6 rear and reckon 8 & 8 on the track ;)

Performance.

Well when you look at the speedo and compared to a mate in a MY02PPP, you realise how quickly your going . But the exceptionally quiet engine and progressive spool up of the twin Scroll, although 322Bhp, really gives the driver very little or no involvement that experience  coming from a Type R to this I can see why possibly the previous owner may have sold it.

Noise.

Absolutely none and no scooby burble. I could have been doing 60 in 2nd or 60 in 6th and exactly the same noise.

Overall

The car was very quick, handled really well but was very bland to drive and unexceiting. 1300 miles later I was starting to regret my purchase  found i didn't mind walking places

3 weeks on

Something had to be done ;) So visited Ian Litchfield & Powerstation and had a miltek sports Cat system and a remap. For all intense and purpose it simular to the STi T20's Ian litchfield sells.

Handling.

It is still precise but the extra Power and noise has enable me to utilise the full potential of the cars set up.

Performance.

The exhaust and a little tweak has taken it up from 322bhp to 349.9bhp with 460Nm Torque. 45mph in 5th is awesome their is no need to change down :D:D:D You can hear the engine load and change gear accordingly. I have had to adjust my driving style, I tend to over Rev but theres no need with this amount of Torque. I'm certain they gave me the wrong Car back. I had more smiles the 60 miles on the way home than all of the previous 1200.

Noise.

Well still no Scooby Burble but i just don't care ;) it now sounds like an Evo/bike and the noise level is just about right IMHO and when you give it some, awesome :D:D:D:D:D

Overall now.

It's tremendous hoot to drive now and I will use any excuse I can to get in it and drive  I wouldn't swap it a blue Ferrari but maybe a red one ;)

So if you buy a MY06 get PPP, Powerstation or 333 etc, etc. That stupid exhaust really smoothers the Characture of the Car it has turned it into a Bland but quick Mondeo IMHO.

Nice report and thats a serious torque figure!! :D

Hope you enjoy it :D

good read tony, glad your happy with her now.460nm torque:eek:

I've just got a Type 25 from Iain @Litchfields, coming from a WRX PPP the biggest thing to get used to for me (apart from the obvious power and handling differences:cool: ) is the gear box. I don't understand why it needs a 6 speed box with such close ratios, the thing has so much torque, I only seem to use 1, 3, 5 or 6.
Maybe it's just my driving style, but I would of thought that the WRX 5 speed longer ratios would suit this set up better.

Flame suit is now on

I have to double check that figure as doing off the top of my head, memory  but seem to think it equates to about 360lbft ish

yes really well chuffed with it now :D

.

I tend to agree with you, The T25's and UK2.5's have a lower Rev band to the 2.0ltrs but have so much Torque :D you would have thought a 5 speed box more appropriate. Perhaps the 6 speed Box is stronger ;)

With the 349.9 bhp is the car still just runnin on normal super unleaded or do u now use octane booster?? what boost u running???

Robocop 30 April 2006 12:02 AM

Nice write up Tony.

I've got a Miltek on my MY06 Spec C and whilst running it in below 4000rpm it sounded boring to say the least. No burble meant it was a dull 1000miles indeed. However, after the remap and 1st service I was free to open it up. It's hard to describe the exhaust note on here, but I'll think you'll agree that higher up the rev range the noise is truly addictive.

I really want the T20/T25 suspension setup, but I did over spend a bit to start of with. :) I'm finding that the standard JDM setup likes smooth roads but can be a handful on some of our quality British roads. What I'm hoping for is that the AST setup will have the ability to give me a compromise between the standard JDM suspension and the ride of some of the German cars (if you know what I mean?); firm but not sloppy and with plenty of feedback.

BTW Nm/1.356 = ft/lb on near enough. Mine made 349bhp with 466Nm (344ft/lb) with 1000 miles on the clock and I'm sure it's loosened up since then. :)

LegacySTi 30 April 2006 12:58 AM

As said serious torque figure!!!

Nice write up Tony,

Good figures too although I'm slightly down on torque than you (447nm / 330lbs) but I've got the burble back :p :thumb:

Trout 30 April 2006 08:57 AM

Tony,

nice to see a great write up. Like Robocop I have the MY06 Spec C with Miltek and remap. Excellent - once loosened up it will comfortably be over 350bhp with similar torque.

It is nice to see others getting the same results as I had a load of abuse when I originally posted up my figures as being 'pub talk' and 'bull' by someone claiming to be very 'knowledgeable'.

It just seems the MY06 cars really are producing the goods :)

Also the noise is not a Scooby noise - but it is very addictive - so different, more Evo like, but with character.

Enjoy it - they are fabulous cars - so much quicker than a Classic chassis.

I also took mine to Brunters with Don Palmer so I could learn to drive it too!

Rannoch :D

Interesting reports, thanks.

I'm finding that lack of kidney punch of an old Subaru in my Evo as well. I think it is probably a more mature and "better" power delivery as there is torque everywhere, but it feels as much like the M3 as the Scooby. Not had chance to try a Subaru JDM twin scroll engine.

ex-webby 30 April 2006 11:10 AM

The MY06 JDM Spec C engine seems to be more responsive to extracting power much more easily.... it was one of the first things Rich said to me when he mapped Iain's first MY06 Spec C in-line with when we were trialing different things on my MY03 Spec C engine. :) The constant results from just a remap and sports cat exhaust seem to quantify this, as these cars are consistently achieving 350bhp from such basic mods.

Perhaps Subaru knew they had to offset the slight increase in weight somehow. :D

John,
It's funny you should say that. When we had some spool up problems on my MY03 Spec C when testing (due to having to profile the boost around initial surge due to induction kit testing), Iain drove my car and said it felt exactly like an EVO did (at that point). Very progressive. After driving a normal single scroll STi and then even a standard Twin Scroll Sti, back to back, the better response and instant "hoof" of the twin scroll was so noticeable.

Regards,
Shaun.

Rich did noticed that when on the R/R and said mine "likes Revs" also Iain did say the 2.0Ltr with the 6speed box suited my Driving  not sure what their saying :D

Tony,
I certainly was quiet when you passed me ;) I was struggling to keep up with it at 322bhp, must be awesome now :D

Here is my graph at 1000m. There is a slight dip at 5,500 rpm which was holding it back. This the lack of SnottyMax as it was mapped during the shortage. With SnottyMax expect 5-10bhp more at the peak!!!

Whatever the car has a fabulous balance of power and handling. Certainly the best Scoob I have driven :)

Well no-one can't say these cars aren't anything but consistent. :)

Looking at the graphs that's exactly what I was thinking!

Look at where each one makes 240bhp (same) and 300bhp (same).

Indeed 300bhp at 4,800rpm is excellent for on road performance with a close ratio box. That and the phenomenal torque compared to earlier Scoob powertrains.

Rannoch :)

nice work tony - the milltek system is a must. altough you loose the burble with the newer jdms' they sound like a super bike on full chat:D

Tony,

I don't think I would get through the gates let alone on the track! :D

Having a bung made this week though, so it can be used on track this season. ;)
