Just back from New Zealand! But no pics to make you jealous :)

Not yet anyway, I thoroughly recommend a plane trip and glacier landing around Mt Cook. I really have holiday blues :(

G-STAR 18 April 2006 11:24 AM

Pics or not, I'm jealous. :(

Never mind..... Pics above :D

Heading back soon myself Steve....glad you enjoyed it

stevencotton 18 April 2006 12:53 PM

I just resized a load and will find some nice ones to post. Was my third time there, can't wait to get back!

Here's some, http://cotton.dk/pictures/nz2006-sn/

InvisibleMan 18 April 2006 01:24 PM

nice. how many pics did you take while in the plane? looks like it would be a camera on automatic rapid fire sort of place

stevencotton 18 April 2006 01:26 PM

I took loads in the plane just in case some didn't come out. Trouble is I don't have a polarising lens, so I'll get one for next year. I took about 250 all in, just around the Mt Cook area, and like you say, just left it on rapid shoot and hope they look ok :)

InvisibleMan 18 April 2006 01:33 PM

easily done these days with memory cards. I took about 250 of just the main castle in Prague recently. Different angles and at different times of the day :D

I think South Island maybe next year :D But that plane ride looks a definate must.

Scoobychick 18 April 2006 01:34 PM

That looks like an uber cool trip Steve  I really want to visit NZ.

stevencotton 18 April 2006 01:45 PM

I've seen four jobs I can do in Wellington so I might just apply for the feedback ;) Plane trip was about 110 quid and lasted 1.5 hours, well worth it. I have relatives in Auckland so I stay with them but I always get down south, I love the alps and also Wanaka for the hiking and biking.

ScoobyJawa 18 April 2006 03:09 PM

I went back in Jan

Loved the place so much I'm applying to live out there :D

stevencotton 18 April 2006 03:33 PM

Might see you there .. first day in the office today, the sight of my commuter train made me want to run home and cry. I'm on the priority jobs list too, I should just do it ..

Wurzel 18 April 2006 03:36 PM

I am moving out to Aukland in 3 or 4 months time to start a new job, so if any of you lot are out there then gimme a shout.

ozzy 18 April 2006 03:47 PM

I'm off to NZ at the end of this year to climb Mt Cook. Spent 4 weeks last year living on a glacier in Alaska doing some Mountain Leader guide training.

Your NZ pics look identical to Alaska and brings back fond memories :D

No luck

Always seems tragic to move to such a beautiful country and end up living in a ****hole like Auckland. Hopefully you'll be able to move somewhere else once you are settled :thumb:

PS Auckland still a lot better than many other capitals but most Kiwis want out

stevencotton 18 April 2006 05:17 PM

Auckland has a terrible traffic problem due to the lack of roads, still a young country and there isn't much infrastructure. But it still beats London hands down, is clean, the people friendly, the only problem is it's too far from the south :)

Interestingly the 'thing' for kids to do with their mildly tuned cars is to remove the bonnet entirely and drive around like that. The mind boggles.

Yeah same here apparantly! :D I've just had it with the UK and love NZ to bits :) Such friendly people

Plan to hang here for the summer, and then head off in time for theirs ;)

Probably Wellington (didn't like it much but being on your own city life will be best to meet people, only other options is Auck and Christchurch but its a bit too dull countryside round there!) and its easy to get over to the south :)

You must be joking, Auckland would be one of the nicest cities around, recently rated 5th in the world.

Evil6 18 April 2006 10:09 PM

Live 30 miles south of Auckland and I think its one of the worst cities I have been to

Wellington is good if you can past the earth quakes and weather as bad as UK as well so you would feel right at home

BexTait 19 April 2006 02:16 AM

I'm hoping to go back to NZ in a few years as I went there last year on a field trip, which meant we were somewhat restricted as to where we went/what we saw. Still got to do a guided glacier walk on Franz Josef and part of the Tongariro crossing (tho I didn't do much due to a buggered knee). Lovely country, and friendly people too.

TurboMav 19 April 2006 04:16 AM

I took the plunge and i've been living in NZ for 9 weeks now. I went from winter in the uk to summer out here and it was HOT. I live in Tauranga, which is on the East coast of the North Island - a stones throw away from Mount Maunganui, which has a fantastic beach and so so clean. The water looks good enough to drink. Next time you guys plan a trip here make sure you visit Mt Maunganui - it's a must.

As said, they are 'behind the times' so to speak and are way way behind Britain in terms of industry etc - but it's still a young developing country and it's growing nicely. What you have to remember is, there are only 4million people here in a country roughly the same size as Britain - compared to 60million there. So life out here is much more relaxed.

All in all it's a nice place to live for a 23 year old :thumb:

p.s The rugby is rather good out here too :D

errr .... you're not supposed to tell the poms about all the really good places in NZ :)

but if u must, at least give them some piccies

http://www.citynews.co.nz/webcams/

- the webcams can be controlled by the internet viewer but the person monitoring their usage noticed that the webcam at MT Manganui beach seemed to be zooming in on bikini clad ladies for most of the time. This webcam use control is now limited.

ps - welcome to NZ .... r u on any of the local Subaru sites?

All I am saying is in comparison to the rest of the country it's a ****hole.

I repeat:

Always seems tragic to move to such a beautiful country and end up living in a ****hole like Auckland.
I live just outside Edinburgh and Edinburgh is a nicer city, that's all I'm going on. We currently have the option to move to NZ at the moment but work dictates that I would have to live in Auckland. Having spent 5 weeks living smack in the middle of it I choose to say no thank you :D

Rest of the country (North & South Island) is

Queenstown :D Now that would be a different story :thumb:

How did you get on with the move - don't suppose you could jot down roughly how you did it and if you have any tips?

Depends on your needs and perspective, mates brother has a $1 million house overlooking the beach with views out to Rangitoto and a big swimming pool. Work is a quick ferry ride to the city. Not many places with that quality of life.

Which is £300,000, what's the average in the UK these days for a decent 4+ bedroom house?

Trucks btw. :)
