how much for gearbox rebuild

I lost 5th gear on my 95 type ra at the donny show yesterday, or maybe broke it as it sounded like it was in the bottom of the gearbox. Are they repairable? the other gears are ok but it vibrates when you back off the acclerator. I would like a 6 speed box but too expensive i think. When it was imported the spec sheet said it had a gear kit fitted would this affect a rebuild?Has this happened to other people and what was the repair bill?

Contact Rally Colin - he rebuilds these g'boxes very reasonably. Based near Silverstone IIRC?

Scoobyslammed 17 April 2006 11:18 AM

Teg sport ain't bad... use good second hand bits...

Tim W 17 April 2006 11:59 AM

Colin's based near Newbury, which is a fair old schlep from Silverstone ;)

Zen Performance also rebuild gearboxes for sensible money, but it really depends on the damage...drive the car for very long with broken teeth in the gearbox and you risk damaging the entire box!

Buying a second hand 'box will probably be your cheapest option, but unfortunately it's condition will probably be an unknown quantity :(

KLR16V 17 April 2006 02:15 PM

Colin has worshops next to Silverstone where he does the gearboxs
did mine in two hours while i waited , met him at the services by prodrive where he took the box off me and came back 2 hrs later all fixed .Great guy great service.

Rally Colin, as in Thames Valley Motorsport? Must have moved again then, last time I looked his garage was behind the Murco petrol station near Hermitage

vulnax999 17 April 2006 02:55 PM

Gearboxes

Mark ( KLR16V) has used Colin, that's where I got the location from! :norty:

Is there another one similar, Tim w ??

Tim W 17 April 2006 03:07 PM

Guess there must be...

Trap2Terrorist 17 April 2006 06:04 PM

It cost me £1600 to have mine rebuilt by a Subaru main dealer and Subaru claims department paid another £700 on top.

In hindsight I should have had it done somewhere else but I wasn't a scoobynetter back then so didn't know any better :(

You should be able to get a complete rebuild, using stringer internal parts, by David at API Engines in Warwickshire. I would think it'll set you back ~£800 inc VAT at his place.

Thanks Trap 2 - how ya doin'

IF the RA box is the close ratio one then it may prove a problem to repair as the ratios are quite different to any others. If you are running bigger horsepower than standard, the old style TY752 box in your car will continue to give trouble as it gets older.

Probably time to upgrade to a better, later box of the TY754 variety, which is much stronger and newer.

Call me for a chat, no obligation.

:eek2: By coincidence, I've just had the official receivers on the phone, Colin Minton was declared bankrupt last year and is no longer trading as Thames Valley Motorsport. The receivers have picked up on Scoobynet as a place where he has / is doing business and are just backtracking.

That is probably why I can't get money out him for what he owes API. The debt is after he was made bankrupt, so there is no reason why l can't get paid, as it has not been included in the previous proceedings.

Perhaps he is now based near Silverstone. Even so, bankruptcy doesn't prevent him doing good work for Subaru owners far and wide.

Stranger and stranger...certainly doesn't appear that way if you call the TVM number, or from the several sources I've spoken to in the last few weeks/days/hours

Sure some one isn't yanking your chain David? ;)

S.P.Developments 19 April 2006 07:48 AM

Dunno, the ' Receivers ' Knew everything to do with Colin's problem - and I've had it confirmed privately from within this BBS that what I say is the case.

Over 9 months l've had no success in contacting Colin on any number I've found for him................. Often the case when someone owes you money.
But if you guys can then I rest my case.

best place I can recommend for gearboxes is Howard @ HDC Subaru.

And I would expect to be able to buy a couple of gearboxes for £800 that is just a criminal price for a gearbox rebuild!

Agreed, theres a fair bit of labour involved in rebuilding them. My P1 box is in need of a build and i too am looking into various options as i have increased the power now.

David_Wallis 19 April 2006 02:53 PM

Daz,

Theres about 4 - 5 hours generally in rebuilding a 5spd and 11 hours in a six speed. They are the times I have been quoted by someone that does them for a living :)

Mark

Maybe see if Rally Colin is still around and get a quote from him?

Maybe Mark can tell us what work was done, and cost? 'box was removed and taken down to Colin though.. :norty:

bigkid 19 April 2006 07:21 PM

Thanks for all the help i'm just waiting to get the box out to assess the damage! I was wondering if the 5th gear has broke or dropped off as it is like being in neutral would it have damaged the rest of the box as i thought it was in a seperate part of the box?

KLR16V 19 April 2006 11:12 PM

Try 07771767874 changed syncros on 2,3,4 and 4 gear itself , y shaped piece was also changed on 4 th and spring inside box was missing he said . Box crunched when going back down through the box , he showed me all the bits that were changed , it wasn't col who did the work but his mate who said he used to work for rally subaru and had the work shop n ear silverstone box has never missed a beat since on a 93 wrx around 280bhp.charged me around £200 .Did not have any probs with him or his mate and found them very helpful did the job in 2hrs while i waited .

hope this helps

Mark

Tim W 20 April 2006 12:39 AM

Ah, now that makes more sense, I knew Colin had a gearbox guy based near Silverstone that he used for the more specialist jobs (ie the ones that involve using a big press!)

Scoobyslammed 20 April 2006 07:07 AM

I lost 5th on my00 Uk turbo... had a few other problems with it... took the box on its own to Teg Sport... they had it for a couple of days... just replaced whatever was needed with good second hand bits... cost me £300 quid...
There was something up with reverse, 5th, syncro, and something else up with the diff off the top of my head...
That gearbox IMHO come back like a new one... for the money I payed was excellent... the New owner of that car is still driving round in it trouble free...
Now there engine rebuilds is another story...lol

MR2Mk1 14 November 2012 01:53 PM

Sorry for thread revival but anyone recomend somone in Hampshire for gearbox rebuilds at a sensible price?

Mine is a bit crunchy and whiney (120K on original box) and has a selection problem with 1st & Reverse but is still drivable and going in to have the gearbox & diff oil changed to Redline shock proof Smurf blood stuff at vast expence but in the long run it will probaly need the sincromesh rebuilt.
