Classic air duct - What's this hole..?

I had to adjust my off-side headlamp today and needed to remove this duct to get to the adjuster;

It's got a hole in it though, which I've pointed out. The duct is before the filter so I'm not worried about that, but just curious to know if this is typical on all Classics..? I have a 2000-year UK Turbo if it matters.

Cheers,

Jonts.

Yes mine has a hole there (MY97). Not lost any sleep over it :D

could it be if the main duct gets blocked then it can still pull in some air and not suck the whole intake system in i've seen this on a few other models of cars

The snorkel assembly has holes in various places, presumably to drain any moisture that gets into the intake, even the air box on my 97 turbo has a hole in the lower bottom corner to drain away water

I think the hole is for a sensor for the intercooler water spray system as fitted to an STi. My standard Type RA also had the hole but a mates STi has a sensor fitted, possibly monitors the incomming air temp and activates the spray !!!. Tale a look at a Classic STi with intercooler spray.

Think you're right my old STi Type R had a sensor fitted in the hole and could never work out what it was for:rolleyes:

It's for an inlet temp sensor, not fitted to UK cars. obviously the same part used in both though.
It's only a fresh air duct, nothing to worry about and doesn't need blocking up.

Thanks for all the replies folks. I guessed the hole would be more of a 'feature' than a problem (i.e. something important I was missing) but it's always nice to have it confirmed.

Cheers all.

Jonts.

I heard it's for an inlet temp sensor too. The hole's there but not all Scoobs have the actual sensor. I'd be interested to see if it could be added to a car that doesn't have one as standard and used as an additional input to the ECU. My Apexi Power FC does have a reading for inlet air temp and presumably can correct for it, but there's simply no sensor there to give it a reading.
