High oil temp?

I have just recently gotten my98 jdm sti type r rebuilt, forgies and steel rods and also a modified oil pump. The reason for the rebuild was that the bottom end went, i noticed that my oil temp went over 110 degrees.
Now ive just ran the car in and am on roughly 2500 miles. Driving up into a multi-story car park yesterday when i got to the top of the carpark the oil temp rose to 90 degrees and looked as if it was going to keep climbing, the oil light then kept flashing. I let the car cool for an hour or so. When i started it up and drove home it was fine, the temp was between 70-80 degrees depending on wether the car was moving or in traffic but never rose any higher. My question is what the hell is going on?

Have you checked the oil level ?

yes, the oil level is just over the second hole on the dipstick, i take it that this is the correct level? whats with the slot cut into the side of it at the top, is this the actual full mark?

JohnD 14 April 2006 03:05 PM

90c is OK but the flashing oil light is not! Assuming the sender is ok it shows the pressure had dropped to single figures! As said, if the oil level is very low and you were climbing the multi-storey, it's possible the oil pick-up was not submerged. Normal idle pressure for a Scoob at full temp., depending on oil viscosity, should be around 30psi (2bar)

mmmm? at idle my gauge shows 0.5bar, the gauges mite not be the most accurate? if im driving slowly say 1500rpm to 2000rpm then the gauge reads 2bar?

Oil level seems ok! Try and rig a pressure gauge and monitor pressures?

got a lamco oil pressure gauge and a tem gauge in at the minute

0.5bar is very low. That's less than 8psi At 2000rpm you should be seeing a good 5bar. I think you need to check out the spec. of the "modified" oil pump? Such low pressure could indicate big bearing clearances or possibly a stuck open pressure release valve.

thanks for the replies! Im thinking it mite be the gauge personally, got some defi ones on the way so ill leave the car sitting up till monday just to make sure all is ok.

Hope that's the case but the low reading at idle ties in with the oil light flashing!

I would suggest being VERY careful, and speaking to who ever built the engine straight away, and tell them that the oil level is fine, but oil pressure at idle is .5bar, and that the oil light sometimes flickers on.

The Lamco gauge may be out, but it's unlikely that the Lamco, and the Subaru oil sensor are BOTH faulty !!!!

I've not got my oil pressure gauge wired up yet, so I can't comment on that. However, the oil temperatures you mention are perfectly okay, as I believe.

I don't consider the oil as up to operating temperature until it hits 95 degrees, which it does everytime I drive it. It goes as high as 120 degrees, though doesn't usually go above 115. As far as the oil performance is concerned, that's fine.

just to clarify im talking about degrees celcius

Agreed. So am I.

thats wierd?? I was told that anything over 90 degrees is trouble? On a friends classic his car runs a constant 75 degrees?

R19KET 14 April 2006 09:38 PM

Your oil temps, aren't an issue, based on the information you have given.

The oil pressure is potentially a big problem. Get it checked.

Bob Rawle 14 April 2006 10:20 PM

If your oil pressure light was tripped from the oem sender then either you are in big trouble or the sender is faulty as it only sends an alarm if the pressure is 0.15 bar, yup not even single figs.

Its not unusual to see higher temps when there is no airflow thro the engine bay but 110 degrees ass definately indicating a problem if that occured in normal driving.

As mentioned you need to get it verified if you can't trust your gauge.

Just to add, the oil temps are dependent on where the sender is mounted. There are 3 different places people put them.

1) in the sump plug
2) in the oil filter (via an adaptor thingy)
3) on the top of cylinder no.3

I did a search through scoobynet threads and found that compared to the sump temperatures, the readings you'll get from cylinder no.3 will be about 10 degrees higher. So, for me, I get almost 120 degrees with the sender on the cylinder, but being near the turbo, that's probably the peak temperature anywhere in the system.

I get 3bar (45-50psi) at idle 800rpm with motul 15-50 oil when hot. The oil temp reaches mid to late 80s degrees C when in slow traffic, and high 70s C when driving steadily, with 6bar pressure. I use a SPA dual gauge/sensors, which needs calibrating to get the correct figures.

I would assume low pressure means the oil stays longer in the engine area therefore becomes hotter than usual

I was showing circa 245f at Aintree on Saturday, which equates to approx 118 degrees C- slightly worrying. Motul 10w50.

It didn't ruin the day too much as the bloody megan headers decided to let go...... :(

RB5_245 29 May 2006 03:10 PM

Again oil temp not the main concern here.

Personally though just under 210F 98C under all conditions, can drop down to 200 if left idling for a long time. Max 240 (115C) on the track then it's time to slow down and cool things off imo. All measured from top cyl no 3.

RRH 29 May 2006 03:12 PM

the real frightening bit was we were only doing ten minute sessions:eek:

RB5_245 29 May 2006 03:39 PM

That would seem about the same as me. Oil cooler as the next mod ;)
