Italian Melon Liqueur - Can anyone help?

Morning,

Bit of a random question here...

I've been asked to find some Italian Melon Liqueur and I'm struggling at the moment. Spent the weekend in Rome and asked in several booze shops but just got blank looks! I'm pretty sure the shop keepers understood me too!

To cut a long story short, a friend's dad LOVES this stuff and my friend would like to get them a bottle as a gift. They've drunk it in the local Italian place (which is now closed for a couple of weeks for a refit) and have been told that it's available in any Italian restaurant and should be easy to find in shops in Italy (well that's not true for a start! :))

Anyway, extensive Googling has shown up some stuff called Midori which - apparently - is rancid... http://img.epinions.com/images/opti/...resized200.jpg
but pretty much nothing else...

The stuff that I've been asked to look for is yellow and resembles Advocaat so it's opaque and looks a bit like emulsion (I'm assuming that the friend's dad wasn't so drunk that he was actually drinking emulsion...) and that it's definitely a liqueur and not a spirit per-se but that's the only description I have to go on...

Like I said - it's a bit of a random question but I hoped that someone here might either work in an Italian restaurant or know what the hell I'm banging on about and might be able to help... :D

Cheers everyone!

wouldn't be Galliano? (It is yellow and Italian) - It isn't opaque, but you usually get it in cocktails, so it goes opaque when you mix it)

Sure it's not Crema di Limone?

Yellow, opaque and lemon is an anagram of melon! :)

Limoncello is the famous Italian liqueur, but is clear. The stuff above is the same with cream or milk in it.

Not heard of it, but if you need something similar we always drink / get battered on Limoncello when in Italy.. lemon based not melon..

Thanks for the replies so far guys. See when I was over there at the weekend, absolutely everywhere was selling the liquere di lemone and lemoncello and I thought she might have made a mistake, but apparently not. It could be a regional thing - they've been to Tuscany a couple of times and found it there so maybe it's localised.

Galliano was a good suggestion too, but they're very definite about the fact that it looks like yellow emulsion (mmm sound's great!)

Anyway - it's no major drama if I can't get hold of any but if anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know!

Galliano doesn't taste of melon iirc :wonder:

Galliano is vanilla - mix it with OJ and vodka for Harvey Wallbangers (never drink something with a name like that btw).

Midori isn't that bad, similar taste to cutting a melon in half, pouring vodka and sugar in then drinking the residue (yes i have tried that in my student days :o)

Grappa?

Had all flavours of this when in Majorca, including Melon.

PS I know Majorca is not Italian:lol1:

Rancid? My sister would describe it as "lush". I'd guess it is what you're looking for.

Have to say it sounds more like Lemon than Melon that you're after. I've tried Limoncello which is rather potent to say the least, but not bad if you sip it.

jonathan100 13 April 2006 05:24 PM

it's midori most def

J4CKO 13 April 2006 08:08 PM

It cant be Grappa as that tastes of a combination of old, dusty books and petrol !

At a trade show in Valencia recently, the stand next to us was promoting Italian liqueurs (Distilleria Bottega) - they had 2 chocolate ones and one called Limoncino, which was fecking gorgeous. Needless to say, I was forced to sample it... several times :)

They do a melon one too - see http://www.alexander.it/

RRH 13 April 2006 09:51 PM

Yep, Midori.

mad_dr 13 April 2006 10:28 PM

To all the peeps that have suggested Midori, I've been most definitely assured that it's not. That stuff is available in pretty much all bars (even the Crown in Cirencester has a dusty-yet-full bottle of it behind the bar) and from www.tesco.com if you fancy some of it. But it's not even the same colour/consistency. Thanks for the suggestions anyway. It does fit the bill in terms of the fact that it's a liqueur and it's melon flavour but - unless the stuff this friend's dad has been drinking has seriously gone off - it's not even a close match in terms of appearance. :)

Also - just to reiterate - it's absolutely not lemon that they're talking about. I did hint to the fact that maybe they were getting their letters and flavours mixed up and I nearly got slapped. ;)

Anyway - thanks for the suggestions - they'll just have to go without!

This it ?

Its creamy refined taste comes from a special combination of cream and melon. Served cold, it is a sip of pleasure in every occasion.
