worrying newbie
 

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if any of you know a place in or near Cambridge that I can get my 99 Turbo 2000 checked out? there's a few things I'm not shore about on the car and I'd like to get it checked.

I bought it at the weekend and it seemed fine, but now the turbo seems to be stopping and starting and when I got home tonight there was some uneven tickover?:wonder: .

This is my first scoob so I could be worrying over nothing but I'd like to get it checked all the same, before I go:cuckoo:

The only mod on the car is non standers exhaust with decat could this be causing problems?(just read "do need a remap?" thread)

Don't know who is nearest to you but the un-even idle may or may not point to the maf sensor. Worst case - a failed or failing maf can end your engine!!! Drive off boost till you have it checked out. The maf is a very common failure on the 99 and 00 cars. I have mine replaced every 2 years without fail at around £80 a time :thumb:

Mass Air Flow Sensor

You can get one from the dealers, and they dont cost much, and there are only 2 screws to change it if my memory serves me right

Is there a way of testing this? guess I need to take it somewhere quick.

Very difficult to test. A Subaru dealer can only spot a failed maf, not a failing one. Personally, i would get it changed now even if it turns out no to be the problem.

Not to worry. From what i can tell, you are about 80 miles or so from 2 or 3 places that i know. API, Scooby Clinic and TSL.
Hang around long enough and i'm sure someoe will point out somewhere loser :)

Welch Group are based in Shelford which is a little closer than the others ;) I've not used them so can't recommend them personally but they an authorised subaru repairer.

The turbo wont actually be "stopping" as it cant, it has no choice but to spin like a loon while exhaust gasses are flowing through it.. But the ECU may be sensing a problem (could be MAF related as mentioned above or another fuel related issue) and its forcing the actuator to open the waste gate which directs most of the exhaust gasses around the turbine causing the turbo to come off boost which inturn helps prevent the car from running lean and things melting.

LOL Don't panic mate, a replacement MAF sensor is only about £80 for an My 99/00. Your love for the car means you'll be paying out more than that (fuel, insurance, modifications -yes, you will modify it- I can assure you! :norty: :D

Do heed the warnings about driving it off boost though. If you ever suspect any problems with the car, keeping it offf bosst till it gets checked out is a good idea. They're reliable cars, but they don't like being thrashed with a sick sensor. The Maf is a particular culprit for killing engines.

had the same problem with my 00 Turbo it was running very lean and idling irractically as mentioned had the MAF sensor changed and now it purrs like a kitten, let us know how you get on JPF

Don't panic though it is unlikely your engine will blow up! That really is worst case scenario.

And yes, you will need a remap if you have a decat downpipe. Possibly could also be the cause...

Seems your turbo is not giving boost...have you got a boost gauge to monitor?

Also not sure how far Xtreeme Scoobies are from you...maybe worth cheking them out also...

Might be wrong but isn't one way to check the MAF is or has failed is by taking out the lead whilst the engine is running?

If it stalls straight away it might be OK or it might be failing. If the engine carries on but very lumpy, it has failed.

I was under the impression that the issue with MAFs and 99/00 cars is that as the MAF fails the ECU try to compensate for the failing MAF.

Might be complete tosh though :thumb:

Re-map is not necessary on a MY99/00.

I would change the MAF and take it from there. If that doesn't fix it then book it into a reputable garage.

I thought I may be over reacting a bit but I havnt much money at the mo so any costly repairs would be a nightmare.:(

I was thinking about taking the custom exhaust off and putting the original back , its so loud that apparently my entire office could hear me driving away yesterday lunch time even though I was out of sight.:lol1: :D That and I want to have a standard car for a while.

As for the decat it seems to be more hassle than its worth at the mo,maybe when I have some money I'll get a new exaughst fitted with one,along with a few other mods of course.:wonder: :D

I know the feeling, my other half bought a freshly imported WRX with all the cheesy modifications including the loudest exhaust I've ever heard! Removed that ASAP! :lol1:

The exhaust backbox is responsible for making most of the row, you could change that for something quieter. I'd leave the decat alone personally. You'll be paying for a more restrictive system -and a car that feels more strangled to drive- that you'll only want to change back to a free flowing one when you want to upgrade the power, anyway. :)

Should you have a remap on a MY00 if you have a decat ?

mines run for 3 years fine

Can they really harm the engine without a remap ?

The guy who sold me the car still had the old exhaust so I'm thinking of getting it put back on if it doesn't cost too much and maybe selling the other, thats if its worth anything, it was put on the car in 03 so its probably worth about 2p.
I guess me insurance will go up too as I told the insurance guy the car was unmodified as I was planning to put the old one back on.
