Removing and fixing number plates
 

Anyone changed their plates over? My missus bought me a private plate for my birthday and it's about time I got round to putting it on.

I just took the back plate off and the plastic screw jobbies broke off (I think they are designed to do it maybe). I managed to get the metal carrier off the inside of the bumper and will be able to put it back on if I can source some of the screws. Either that, or I'll just stick it on with some heavy duty double sided tape I have for a cleaner look.

The front looks a much more difficult proposition though, I can't get my hand up the inside of the front bumper, and the double sided tape tactic looks doomed to failure as there is much less plastic to mount the plate on. Just wondering if anyone else has done this and what they did? Car is a 54 STI.

I use Velcro Safe at high speed [Fully Tested ;)]

So I can switch to my show plates as and when required

Sod all the screws off mate and get some 3M Industrial strength velcro.

Strong as you like and look much much better :D

thanks for the replies - where would I get this velcro from, as I have to sort it out tomorrow? also, will this be sufficient for the front plate, which looks like there is only an inch of plastic behind it before the lower grill starts?

Plenty of grip at the front even with the small area and standard size plates

Most motor factors sell it I paid 65p for a 2 ft strip.My dads Toyota came with some Allen key bolts which look cool if you want that look

Just remember how easy it is for Mr Undesirable to nick your velcro plates;)

I use a double sided sticky foam sourced from my local motor factors, similar to the stuff most car badges are stuck on with. If you do use anything sticky ie velcro or pads, make sure the surfaces you're sticking to are really clean. Use an alcohol wipe to get rid of any grease and they won't budge anywhere :thumb:

As for theft, there so dam sticky it really ain't that easy to just pull them off, and how hard would it be to whip a couple screws out?!?!?!

thanks guys, I went the double sided foam route and put em on this morning. Looks fine, let's see if they hang on!

Velcro is a nice idea, but they didn't have any, and I hopefully won't have to take them off again.
