Why it no bloomin' work?
 

Bit of background first. :)

Recently our Philips DVD Writer drive gave up the ghost. So I did a search on this very forum. And read many good reviews about Pioneers DVD Writer (DVR 109) A quick internet search later found that the 109 was no longer availiable but the 110 was. And that it also does DVD Ram.

Great I thought, and a quick order to Dabs.com later we had a drive sitting in front of me. Sans software.

Took the tower apart, swapped over the drive and restarted the computer (XP) Discovered its set up where the cable goes to the DVD/RW and then loops to our other Reader.

After a little while Windows found the drive, and after a little bit longer said it was now installed and ready for use.

So I opened Windows Explorer and it had erased our other drive. OK I thought, I'll reinstall that later. Better test the Pioneer. Stuck a disc in and Autoplay didn't launch. So I double clicked in WE and the computer froze. So after a couple of minutes I turned it off and tried again. With the same results.

Looking at Pioneers site for drivers it says you shouldnt use any of the other drivers with XP as the standard included ones should be fine.

Tried manually installing the drivers through Windows Control Panel. But that didnt help. It says the drive is working properly, when it clearly isnt. In the end got so sick of it I took it back out and reinstalled the broken Philips RW. Restarted the computer and everythings back as it used to be. The reader is now back as our d:\ and the broken unit is back as the e:\

So, (finally :p ) my question is.

What am I doing wrong. We want to keep the seperate reader as d:\ and have the RW as e:\

Did u set the new drives jumper to slave?

Forgive my ignorance, how do I do that?

On the back of the drive you should notice a black/blue or grey small plastic oblong wedge. On the back you will notice these words:

M S C
A L S


Carefully remove the plastic jumper off MA and put it onto the 2 pins marked SL (Slave) as a rule the top IDE connector is Master the second is slave and the third connects to your motherboard.

For future reference, use CS, it means cable select and basically decides it's self

Not the best method IMHO. Can cause issues with other devices that don't support it properly (Such as Hard Drives). I always set my devices to the prefered connections. I.e. MASTER or SLAVE.
