In the words of Victor “I don’t Believe it!”

I was a passenger in one of my works mate 2001 Bug Eye WRX, totally standard, we were travelling along the A50 and the typical happened, MR rep came up behind at 70mph is his Vectra and flashed us to move over.

Let the fun begin

We pulled over with the intention of flooring it as the Vectra got level with us leaving him well behind.

As he did the Vectra just kept pulling away, he could not keep up with it, we gave up at 135MPH

An the worst part – IT WAS A DIESEL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, (nice cloud of diesel smoke coming from the back end)

Checked the Reg no. tonite on the RAC site and it does not list which engine it has other than to say it’s a Heavy Oil Auto Vectra SRI (2005)

What the hell have Vauxhall done to their diesels to let it out run a WRX

I know hes going to get the p155 took out of him for weeks, saying that swaped my scooby for a 93 convertible his scooby leaves that standing.

what i can't understand is he was trying, just been looking at the specs and it must have been the 3.0 V6 CDTi as it had twin tail pipes (unless its an after market system)

They are only listed as 175BHP

Scooby = 225 BHP

I did blitz an Audi a6 2.5 TDI today in my STIPPP, he thought he had me..... but i just screamed past! (private road of course).. he was chucking out so much soot at one point that i put my headlights on and my wipers!...lol
So my advice is..... you need 300bhp+300lbft at least to stay ahead of most modern "prestige" cars, especially turbo diesel varients!

must say the Vectra VXR looks very nice but for the money

Hi everyone I'm a nooby here. I drive a 200bhp & 306lbft 1.9 CDTi Vectra. i've pulled away from many cars with a little puff of smoke.

Let's face it though our Vecs are no match for your motors on the twisty or launching, but once we're moving, move over. LMAO

My mate has just had his 3.0V6 CDTi rolling roaded and got 220bhp & 310lbft.

Very impressive figures! How long will the rattly old things last? Not very IMHO!

hmmm private road I followed a Merc up to 130 yesterday, I think he expect me to fall behind, i stayed back but kept up. I didnt expect him to keep pulling so strong though, I couldn't have passed him if I wanted to. If people decide to race theres soooooo many things out there now that are actually really quick!!

I got caught out by my mates Corsa, this is an L reg SRI 1.4 and SHE's got it kitted out :) caught me by bootin it when I was below 2000 revs in 4th, obviously put it down to my terrible driving but still :)

There are many fast cars out there nowadays, and the scooby is not the fastest.... However, it is down to the driving skill too, and the condition of your car. The standard bugeye starts to pulll strong from 3500 >rpm, so if you are cruising with 70 in the 5th gear and then floor it, well not much will happen; till you reach the proper rpm. But drive it properly and I can tell you it is not slow. But the PPP would make a huge difference on it, not only extra power and torque, but the way it gets delivered.

Considering most people on this site bang on about how fragile the Impreza is, and how much "specialist" care and attention it requires I think commenting on the reliability of another marque is pretty far fetched!

Now if you want to drive something GM & fun nip down to your local vauxhall main dealer and organise a test drive in the Monaro VXR.. They are ceasing production soon so not many about so get a drive now :)

P.S. The Imprezas are crap up the top end! Great for 0-60 sprints and on the tight and twisties but on the open road. most things will say "bye.. bye.."

As we all know you have to weigh off reliability against performance, but to attain my figures all i've done is fit a K&N Panel Filter, CAT back stainless exhaust and a Diagnostix UK Tuning module. All the tuning module does is fool the ECU into thinking that the Common Rail requires more fuel, thus increasing the pressure slightly. Nothing too drastic though, and we've not had any reliability issues from hundreds of diesels from many manufacturers.

My view of things is: Diesels are a different kettle of fish really, the engine will basically use as much air and fuel as you can throw at it, but as you do not have the predictability of a 'spark' to produce ignition the problem is therefore keeping everything in sync, once your up at 4,000 revolutions per minute the engine is consuming a lot of fuel and this must be injected into the cylinders to control the "firing".. In the past this has been a serious down fall, mechanical fuel governors are just not very accurate and the engines were loud and while torquey by nature produced very little power so were very slow at the top end.

With modern technologies this fuel injection can be carried out with a lot more accuracy but you are still restrained by the fact diesels run on the principle of fuel detonation so the engines are under a lot more strain so the faster you want to make it rev the stronger you must make the block, crank, pistons, head etc so there has to be a happy medium to save on costs.. Modern diesels basically blow the old clattery oil burning things we are all used to out of the water.
