'94 Legacy Starting Issues

Hi,

I have a '94 Legacy that has an intermitent starting problem. Engine turns over fine but just won't spark. Have replaced spark plugs and leads and it still occurs. Had AA out, man said that it could be "igniter" towards the back of the engine, or could be crank shaft sensor towards the front of the engine. The problem is day to day, sometimes it is fine, sometimes it won't start.

2nd problem, don't know if it is related to the first. Anti lock brake light has just started coming on and remaining on. drives and brakes (thankfully) fine. When stopped, and ignition is turned off electronic whirring noise comes from right hand side gold/bronze coloured box (as you are facing the car) under the bonnet. I guess this is to do with the ABS.

Any suggestions as to how to resolve both problems will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Dan

First problem is possibly the cam position sensor....

Can you do an ECU fault test and see if it comes up with errors?

Agree on Cam position sensor.. especially if it does it when hot starting mainly

thanks for the suggestions. Sorry a bit new to fiddling around with the Legacy. I understand the ECU, but how do I do a fault test? Please forgive my ignorance.

Also, cam position sensor, where will I find this to adjust...I am not being stupid on purpose, just want to make sure I am looking for the right bit. I appreciate the help.

Any thoughts on the second problem anyone?

Thanks

Dan

bumped

The buzzing whirring continued all day yesterday from what I assume to be the ABS box of tricks. I left work and arrived to a flat battery. Once started with jump leads (which was a surprise considering problem 1) there was no whirring and no “anti lock brake” light on that dash…another intermittent problem? Any ideas?

I think I have the answer so far as the cam position sensor is concerned. I will let you know how it goes this w/e.

Thanks

Dan
