Speeding awareness course...instead of NIP?

I got flashed at 35 in a 30 so have been offered a speed awareness course with Thames Valley instead of points.....anyone been? is it grim?

I get about 3 points every 4-5 years so am thinking of just taking the points instead as its cheaper (£60 fine...£71 to go on the course plus time)

Anyone go and fine it entertaining (do they do snacks?)

T

Kuro 30 March 2006 09:27 AM

it's apparently really good. We have a few people in our IAM group that came along after doing the awareness day.

In the north west you get to spend most of the day with a serving class 1:)

Go for it mate, think of it as a great learning opportunity:)

davyboy 30 March 2006 09:31 AM

I've done it twice ;) ........it's actually pretty interesting, although a lot of that would depend on who is presenting.

You get a coffee half way though, and it was all pretty relax and most people had a laugh. You do get a few who start off all defensive, but it rarely lasts.

kingofturds 30 March 2006 09:34 AM

I went on one a couple of years ago, after i drove my car into a field, they offered me this as an alternative to going to court.Cost about£110 i think and comprised of 2 days. On the first day we all met up in a hotel (about 15 of us) and all told our stories of dodgy driving and then went on to watch a safety video:sleep: In the afternoon we were then split into 4 groups and taken out by an instructor to acsees any bad driving habits we had.
On day 2 we were taken out again this time being assessed on how much we had improved after the 1st day.

Ps we had coffe and biscuits so was not a total waste of time:luxhello:

It works a treat then!;)

I wonder what the reoffending rate is for you compulsive speeders in you fast cars then???;)

Tiggs 30 March 2006 09:37 AM

"we had coffe and biscuits "

sold......!

kingofturds 30 March 2006 09:38 AM

Out of the the 3 others i shared car with my misdemeanor was pretty mild compared to them. 1 had been t boned at 40mph after pulling out of his junction on his mobile, another had written off £7k worth of mobile traffic lights and a generator delivering cakes. :lol1:

Are you not only allowed to go on another course if its been more than 2 years after you first attended? :p you must be quite the regular:lol1:

davyboy 30 March 2006 09:46 AM

They were 3 years apart.

If it was not for the courses I'd actually have been banned!

john_s 30 March 2006 09:46 AM

Dad did one last year, and he said it was quite interesting.

In lancashire, they only offer you one if it's over 3 years since you last went on one.

John.

Leslie 30 March 2006 09:46 AM

Got to be worth doing really, its surprising how points can suddenly add up when you dont expect it, you could regret not taking the chance to avoid them.

kingofturds 30 March 2006 09:49 AM

Dont turn up in the scoob though they will probably ban you on the spot:thumb:

So, where's all the comments about this country going soft on criminals and sending them on holidays to Florida then?

Gotta love SN...

No one was convicted of speeding or driving without due care,i was just "invited" to attend a course:thumb:

Simes777 30 March 2006 09:56 AM

Bah! This county is going soft on criminals. Next you'll be telling me that the course is in Florida.

I'll get me coat :D

Tiggs 30 March 2006 09:56 AM

as above, i have been convicted of nothing and may yet take my chance to prove myself not guilty in court (or go eat the biscuits)

lightning101 30 March 2006 10:02 AM

At the end of the day with three points you have the chance of moving up to 6 points very easily which would cost a lot more added to your insurance etc, so watching some safety presentation and being educated about road safety is no loss apart from your time. :)

Tiggs 30 March 2006 10:14 AM

its interesting that Thames Valeey only offer this to speeders at 36 mph and less...........so they are going to offer saftey tips to those driving at a tiny amount over the limit but offer none to those doing lots over! all very odd (hope the biscuits are good!)

kingofturds 30 March 2006 10:15 AM

Choccy digestives :)

Spoon 30 March 2006 10:17 AM

Tiggs, paying for a house above the surveyors estimate AND getting flashed for speeding!!!

You're starting to sound almighty common you know. :thumb:

Pay and take the course, meet your new mates. :D

Tiggs 30 March 2006 10:37 AM

to be honest i was approaching the camera at 31 but wanted to see how the other half live and notched it up couple of mph :D I even did a sort of loud exhaust noise as i wizzed past to complete the effect......if only i'd had my baseball cap with me :D

jasey 30 March 2006 10:41 AM

During any presentations / lectures you may want to be careful with any "wise cracks".

Enjoy the biscuits :).

so you still get points, you can then pay 60 quid fine and walk away or you can get points and pay 71 quid for a course that involves you taking time off!!!

I can see it as a real bargain, must be fcuking good coffee and biscuits to warrent the extra 11 quid and day off.!!

For £71 you don't get any points. :thumb:

Tiggs 30 March 2006 11:02 AM

as above......£71 = course and no points £60 = no course and 3 points

its all quite interesting because someone doing 37mph behind me would not be allowed to do the course....is that because they are beyond saving? why not offer 2 points and course? i really cant see why the police value the course but only offer it to so few people? and the people who were going the slowest!

jasey 30 March 2006 11:05 AM

It's a good point - Maybe you should ask them when you're on the course. I bet you get some sarky reply !

Spoon 30 March 2006 11:09 AM

The people doing 36 mph and below, are slightly unlucky to be caught and can be potentially saved from turning to major crime in the future, if they attend a really special course. ;)

The people doing 37mph are hardened criminals that should be taken off the road at the earliest possible juncture.

the temptation is there but i assume they see 10 zillion people a day and it would be the same as trying to wind up a telesales caller.....pointless despite the ability to generate an erection in 69% of SN'ers :D

I'd stick to asking them if they think that people are there to learn about fast things can kill or if they don't want 3 points and had heard you get free biscuits ;)
