Cleaning A Top Mount Up

Hi Team,

I've done a deal on a P1 top mount and I will need to do a little fin straightening on it followed by some fresh paint.

My main question is......

Can I submerge the top mount in boiling water and a cleaning detergent to clean it right through ?
We have a cleaning tank in work basically it's a tray that turns around and the water gets pumped up and over what you wish the clean.... similar concept to a dish washer I imagine http://www.imprezasport.net/forums/s...fault/wink.gif

The water is boiling hot though and I mean hot !

The detergent is not soapy it's an industrial one that is designed for grime and oils. Believe it or not we had a machine gearbox going around in it yesterday and it cleaned all the cogs and shafts up a treat ready for re-build.

Thoughts gentlemen please will this be ok for the top mount ??

Cheers
Simon :D

It arrived then Simon :lol1:

on the new age cores there is a rubbery seal inside. dont know on the sti5 one if its there but i personally would not get it too hot. Maybe ultra sonic would be a little kinder?

the detergent? some can be nasty towards ally - check on a bit first if all it normally does is steel etc.

If you are going to do that make sure you give the insides a good wash out with petrol. Or is the heat enough to evaporate it all as soon as you take it out?

Glad you got a good deal:thumb:

Hey Mark small world !! :lol1:

I'm meeting Richie tomorrow evening to collect it from him he is meeting me half way.

Some good points there and yes the water is very hot indeed... I think it holds it on boiling point. It may be to aggressive for this.... It may not need it but I'm just doing a little homework first ;)

Fin straightening... what's the best tools for ther job ?

Cheers

I tried all the knitting needle / toothpick / screwdriver stuff that everyone recommends........ok.......but then i got my feeler gauges out:)

Miles better and easier. you need a feeler gauge of the type that tapers down to a round end. pick one thats a tad stronger than the fins (maybe 0.20mm) then you can tease them nicely without leaving little kinks that the above tools leave.

does a great job. makes your eyes go wonky though and gives you a bad back:(

That's some good info there... I'll take it into work with me and have a look through my mates tool chest ;)

I'll see if I can find somewhere quite in work and get them to pay me to do it :D

I used Autoglym machine cleaner spray and hot water from the tap for the cleaning out, and a wooden kebab/satay skewer for straightening. Wife's hairdryer to dry it all out internally.

Great that sounds like a much more gentle option :thumb:
I'll have to see it before I decide how much of a deep clean it will require :)

I have cleaned intercoolers by letting windshield washer fluid set in them for 2 hours and then shake it about. Empty it out, let it dry and there you go. Careful with strong cleaners because they can damage the soft aluminum.

Ok thanks for that.... sounds like it is going to have to be a gentle clean to me rather than the washer then.
