NEW MINI.MAC
 

Anyone else using one? My kids bought it for me as I was having so many probs with my PC. I'm really impressed so far, paarticularly with it's size; roughly i/27 the size of the PC.

I moved to OSX a few months ago, Windows seems ancient when I use it now. Perhaps Vista will perk it up. I have the iMac and can't fault it so far, silent, small footprint and great screen. I've just signed up for .mac - another great service from Apple - and will be dumping my current hosting company.

Didn't one of those gadget programs on Channel 5 review this. Their opinion was that it was okay as long as you weren't intending to use it for big Video editing etc... And also that you have the monitor, keyboard and mouse already.. As it was demonstarted you basically pay a small amount just the unit. But then end up paying a lot more afterwards in the aftermarket stuff to get it up and running.

Your right, but like most of these "generic" gadget shows, they're missing the point of the Mac Mini.
The ethos was to lure people aways from Windows-based machines. And it's working. Albeit slowly ;)

To do big video editing, you would still need to upgrade the PC. So, their argument isn't valid.

The other big issue is that yes, Vista will bring the PC up to date, but at a cost. I've heard rumours of 2 gig of Ram etc required to run it......

I did the exact same thing for my dad prior to Xmas (when a PC I gave him finally died) - lent him a Mac (he'd only seen mine running in the studio, so hadn't really seen what it could do) for a few days.
Set up his email/internet & Office and called him the next evening to see how he'd got on (both parents were a little aprehensive about changing to OSX)

He'd already ordered his from Apple after about 2 hours!! :D

My mum even likes it. She uses it, and she finds it difficult to use the dimmer!! :D

But in all fairness, they aren't gamers. If you want games, PC is still the way forward.

Xbox 360 is the new way forward for games, the PC is sinking back into the office where it belongs. :D

Have to agree that for gaming, at this precise moment, the PC and consoles have the edge. Though with the dual boot side of things, and when decent graphics drivers are released, I'd be interested to see what XP on an Intel Mac will actually achieve.

Plus of course, as machines are now intel based, it could make game ports a little easier, which would be a good thing.

I'm intrested to see what mum makes of my G4 when I take it home.

TBH there are certain programmes I find easier to run on OSX than pc, photoshop and dreamweaver being the main ones.

However I prefer windows version of file preview, so it is swings and roundabouts as far as thats concerned.

I can't get rid of my pc as I have a pocket pc as a mobile gallery, but am considering a mini for an email and internet machine when I get my own place and have my fullblown network and studio.

So I'm sitting on the fence :D But I do love my G4 powerbook.

Those are some of the best G5 laptops ive seen :D
