Seen tyres, what are they???
 

Seen some tyres on an sti in Wilsons in Chadwell Heath.

They look like semi slicks virtually, on gold OZ P1 wheels, anyone know what they are and if they're worth gettin for fast road use or if they're overkill

They were 18s btw

Offer superb dry grip, adding around 20mph to my roundabout speeds :norty: but suffer quite badly with tramlining and a harsh ride due to the extremely rigid sidewalls. Can be scary in the wet, so I use other tyres in the winter months.

Are they recommended over something like goodyear F1s? I've had the F1s on previous cars and loved them every time but I'm willing to try something else if its worth it.:)

As I said, they are outstanding in dry, warm conditions, but aren't really suitable for British winters IMHO. I have a set solely for summer/track/show use on a spare set of STi alloys, but use more normal tyres through the colder, wetter months. I can strongly recommend Vredestein UltraC for all season (except snow) use, offering outstanding dry grip (90% of the RE070) and superb wet (just as good, if not better than F1's and Toyo's IMHO) and at very good prices if you hunt around.

I've seen some on a Scoob that are worse than that, i swear they were almost like race cut slicks

There is a fine line between road and track tyres...... In most cases its easy to see the difference, no-one will need to point it out to you.

F1's .... T1's are road tyres for all weather use

Yoko A048's / R888's / DO1J's / Mich pilot Cup sports are track tyres and you should think carefully before using on an all year round road car... They will wear quickly and need to be warm before they work

RE070 / Dunlop SP sport Race are not so track orientated in their look but also offer excellent grip. They too need warming up and offer slightly better wet traction than those above ......

If you use your car on-track then change the tyres before you go to play, if its for road use stick with road tyres, thats my advice .....

Oh and road tyres tend to give you more of an indication how close to the limit they are (they squeel at you) Track days tyres only do that when on the absolute limit or about to spit you off across a field......

If I do buy tyres like these then they will be for a summer set of wheels as I intend to keep the standard gold 17s for the winter.
I'll probably never take my car on the track, although I'd like to, I'd be so worried that I'd bend it that I wouldn't enjoy myself! But thats a different story.....

I wouldnt suggest spending big bucks on track tyres for the road. They wear very quickly, arent warm for about 5 mins HARD driving and as said will probably make the ride a bit pants. You will have to be driving the car stupidly to get out of shape with F1's anyway?

I've always liked them like I've said before.

More likely to bend it on the road. At least on track it's one way traffic with good sightlines and a predictable surface. If you get giddy and overcook it on track then you may have an incident, or potentially someone else may involve you in theirs, but that's no different to everyday driving, trying to dodge 32m halfwits instead of 10 or so. For a relatively safe 1st track experience you could come along to the WYIOC day at Blyton. To keep it safe we have just 5 cars on track at a time with no overtaking, and at a ridiculously low price.

Its about what you are happy with not what everyone else tells you is best......Sounds like you like F1's so why change a good recipe.

Personally I ran F1's and they were good. Reasonable grip, hard wearing and not too noisey, did the job for me on the roads.

Gary, the Blyton track is very narrow so overtaking would be extremely dangerous. As we all attend in our road cars which are our pride and joys, it would be silly to take any more risk than is absolutely necessary. If I were on Oulton, Cadwell, Ty Croes, Donny, Silverstone et al with their wide lane and huge run-offs then of course I'd be enjoying the overtaking. Our Blyton days are about fun and socialising, not a p!ssing contest.

I'm glad the F1s are held in high regard, I've very happy with their wet weather performance as well so possibly it would be cheaper for me to just have the 1 set of wheels with F1s for all year round performance. It's all just speculation at the mo but I do intend to buy a nice new set of wheels soon.
