Faxing via a PC!!!
 

I need a quick and easy (and free if possible) solution to allow me to receive and send faxes directly from my PC.

Any ideas?

If you have XP, you can use the standard fax service.

guessing that needs a phone line rather than a broadband connection? are there any ADSL alternatives?

That could be tricky when it comes to receiving. As most Faxes rely on the actual Phone number from the sender. Broadband uses a different method. I.e it's always switched on.
Have you looked at whether any ISPs or on-line providers can provide such a service?

my mobile phone provider gives an option to receive fax's to the phone which are then emailed to me. I wonder if this is an option in the UK as well? But this is only incoming so you might need to get a modem.

some ISP's offer a Fax-2-email service - Plus.Net certainly did.
