Pug 106 GTI
I drove one of these around last night for a couple of hours, "spirited" driving, etc, I can honestly say it the most fun I have had in a car for a long time (Scoob excluded).
Loves being revved, sounds cool (has a Magnex BB) and handles like a go-kart. Cant rate this little car high enough. :thumb: |
I had one for 3 years. The longest I've ever kept a car for. Loved it to bits. By far the best handling/fun car I've ever driven.
Shame Peugeot aren't going to replace it. |

Do you know what the BHP figures are, save me googling :)
And are there any easy mods to free a few more horses up, she wants to mod it slightly. Also wheels, does upsizing spoil the handling? |
120bhp and I think some of the later cars came with 130bhp.
As with most cars that size anyhting bigger than a 15'' wheel will start to negatively affect the handling. hth:) |
I think the standard alloys are 14's so stepping up to 15's would be fine then, she also wants to lower it slightly.
Another item that was talked about was an i/k, but im not sure whether any gains can be had from this. Can these be "chipped"? |
use to have one untilit won crash of the month in redline.

The 130bhp is a myth IIRC. All were/are 120bhp. Weigh naff all too.
My other half has one and I get to play in it now and again. WHilst I'm a staunch Jap car fan I have to admit that its a great little car, well worthy of its accolades in the press over the years imho. Ours has been reliable too, amazingly. |
Ive just traded in my 106gti for a WRX. It wasnt a bad car but they cant really take hard driving every day! I spent quite a lot repairing it. £600 for a new gearbox, £400 when head gasket went and £240 to replace the clutch. As well as the usual grooved discs, EBC pads and tyres. That was only in 2 1/2 years!! Mine was on a T plate 120bhp and i added a full magnex twin exit exhaust, K & N 57i induction kit, decat pipe and the power rose to 145bhp on a rolling road. Still enjoyed it though but It just started to feel a bit small and unsafe at speed. But the thing that annoyed me the most was almost every time i went on the road idiots sat up my arse wanting a race ( corsa's nova's, saxo vtr's grrrrrrr!!!) It was all worth it though just to see peoples faces when such a small car blown them away!!

Just took her to Elites in Rainham, priced up a set of 16's OZ and lowering springs :D
|
Noo, lowering them ruins the ride/handling :(
With the state of roads on this godforsaken island you need something as compliant as the 106Gti just to make decent progress! :p Give Skip Brown a call if you want genuine advice on what does and doesn't work with Pugs. Skip Brown Cars & Components Ltd Tarporley Ridley CW6 9RY 01829 720492 |
I pass skip browns everyday! I tried to flog him my ****ed gti but he had more sense!! lol
|
haha :p They are quite clued up on these cars aye :) We've had quite a bit of work done there, getting ours up to usable condition - worn beam bearings, cambelt, brakes etc. I'd rather take it there than to some clueless Main Stealer.

Had one a few years ago, superb cars...
Quicker than you'd expect for 120bhp, superb handling, great fun to drive, I loved mine! :thumb: |
My mate's got a rallye with a gti engine in with a few mods (full de-cat, dastek etc). Kept with my scoob at 255 bhp and was awesome through the corners...true go-kart.
Different story now with my TD05 on board though :D Great little cars though |
Have to agree they are superb cars. Ive had my VTs for nearly 4 years now (basically same car as the 106 GTi) and touch wood its never missd a beat and never gone wrong!!
Totally cheep fun motoring. P.s i have to agree with the lowering comment, its a definate no no, as the car handles superbly as standard theres just no point in messing araound with it.:) |

The mods she wants are going to be for looks purposed only. :) |

They can be remapped.. http://www.chipwizards.co.uk
I bought one in January, low mileage good service history, etc. It was good but it felt like i was driving a sardine can. I would always walk into the garage and wonder if it was going to start, cost me alot in running repairs. In the end i saved money and upgraded to the ibiza cupra which imho is a massive step up from the humble 106 gti. I'd never own a peugeot again, cheap tack! |
