PD Diesel engine oil
 

Was going to change the oil on the missus 2002 Sharan, went into Halfords to get the correct oil to the VW specs for the PD engines, Castrol 'Edge' I think, it was 42 quid for 4 litres, the car needs 4.3 so a top up litre container is required at 13 quid, so 55 quid plus a filter so 60 ish quid to change the oil !

She has booked it in at the local tyre and exhaust place who have quoted 120 quid but as they are only a local non VW garage (the main agents are miles away and a bit of a PITA to get to ), I suspect they will throw any old 10/50 crap in it, at least if I do it myself I know its got the proper stuff in it as I beleive PD engines are quite sensitive to the oil type.

Had this before with the T5, the Halfords muppet told me proudly how he put Magnatec in it when I had specified quite clearly a fully synthetic, wasnt happen when I made them drain it and refill it with some full synthetic

Am I being a bit anal or is it a real concern, is the lack of a service stamp more detrimental, to be honest garages dont fill me with confidence.

Car is 3 and a half years old so does it matter (the service record that is)

Doing it yerself is fine but you've gotta use 505.01 oil as a minimum.

On TDIclub in the US and a few other forums I've seen pics of the camshaft wear on PD motors with less than 40K miles up that haven't used the 505.01 regularly.

The engines become basically scrap because of the wear and the swarf ... the cam operates the injectors (like a syringe to build up the 30,000psi injection pressure) as well as the valves, hence the special oil.

If you have a VW / Audi / Seat / Skoda dealer anywhere near you, they usually do "Quantum" 505.01 oil for about £30 for 4 litres ... even the VAG own-brand oil is £10 inc VAT for a litre top-up bottle or about £37 for 4 litres. Don't forget a Ford dealer will have it too 'cos some Galaxys use the PD motor.

You only need 505.01 if the car is on 10K miles / annual servicing. The 506.01 spec is for "long-life" servicing.

It's cheaper at GSF (forget the price - but it's Qunatum). Also look at http://www.millersoils.net/index2.html - their 505.01 is also cheaper - just find a stockist near you.

From all I have read (coming up to oil service on the Passat) it HAS to be 505.01 spec. - just need to find the cheapest supply.

The Quantum oil is what the dealer will use, so GSF is the place to get it. Usually about £30 for 5 litres. :)

I got my oil change done on my Fabia VRS at the weekend. £65.15 all-in at the Skoda main dealer. So I'd ring round if I were you, either that or buy the oil yourself and get the local spanner monkey to change it for you.

I have a VW Transporter T5 2.5 five cyclinder 174ps and i use the Millers PD oil, it is £21.99 for 5 Litres that is 505 01. I just use it for topping up as they do use a bit of oil.

VW dealers will sell you PD oil for about £20 for 5 liters if you say you are trade!

Cheers for all the suggestions, rang the garage and he didnt have a clue so it aint going there, he said he could get some in if thats what I wanted, so in other words any old crap would have gone in, its a poor show when so called pro's do a worse job than I can do myself !

And people insist on a service history, its all bollocks !
