Whining at speed
Just bought a 2003 STI with 19k miles
As it was a quiet night I thought I would see what it could do. At about 110 a whining noise started from what seemed like the front passenger area. This got louder the faster you went and made no difference if you took your foot of the gas. Is this a wheel baring or belt problem?? Any ideas would be helpful Cheers PS - No Wife in car!! |
PS - No Wife in car!! hehe was gonna say that
mine whines too at speed, check your geabox oil level and rear diff, suprising how sounds turn out to be coming from a totally different place. think they all whine a bit. |
check your bearings but jacking up and grabbing the wheel and trying to shake, but on the 9 - 3 position on the front u might feel movement throught the steering rack, 12 - 6 should be pretty solid.

If the whining sounds like someones blowing across the top of a milk bottle, don't worry - it's a common problem when driving 100+ on private roads. I'm sure wind direction has something to do with it, as I don't get sound all the time.

mines is the same as soon as you hit 100mph and the whine gets louder as you get closer to 150mph, really annoying!!
thought the noise was coming from the wing mirrors, my remove them to see if it makes any difference. |
Iv got the same noise on my New Age 2003 WRX.
Sounds like a whining, i thought at first it was the gear box or the Diff, but the noise is still there when you but the car in netrual and as you slow down so does the noise. Recently had a service so cant be the Diff as the oils where changed in the gearbox and Diff. Tho my Tyres are Worn on the inner edge and iv heard that that can cause the noise to. This is driving at 30-40 MPH. Really does get on my Nerves |
At about 110 a whining noise started from what seemed like the front passenger area. Had it on my 05 wrx - lots of theories but a popular one is it's due to the frameless windows - try opening it and closing again - helps for some people.. |
