Reconned engine sh***ed. Claiming money back?

2 yrs ago i bought an engine from a certain classic car company. mine was spewing oil out and smoking all over. so itook it to them when they said and they built me an engine and stuck it in. Its been in back and forth with problems. Knackered seats, valves. Taken the head off to finally see the problem. pot 3 has oil and **** in the centre about 2mm high, the cyls are ovalled and the pistons in 1 and 3 move about 1-1.5mm side to side and have blow by round parts. Its only covered 300miles since it was last there being fixed!

Is there anyway i can get something back from this?

One pissed off Phil
over £1000 down the swanny.

Ask for a full refund. If they don't give it, take them to small claims court. It's dead easy.

And next time if you want it done right I'd be tempted to learn to do what ever work you can yourself. Works for me on older engines, labour of love and all that.

midget1500 20 February 2006 07:46 PM

that sounds awful. did they actually do any work on the engine???

Poor Guy 20 February 2006 08:19 PM

doesnt look like it :(

didnt have the time to rebuild mine when i wanted to so i took it there for a month for them to do it. (was supposed to take a week)
This company is a big one and has just fobbed us off.

I think you should buy a brand new engine, neatly fitted into a brand new motors, lovely !

Not wanting to take the p1ss and I can sort of see the attraction but nowadays I really couldnt be arsed if it was my only transport. Like the man said, small claims court, try the Citizens Advice Bureau for some added assistance.

trouble that means new gearbox/shaft/mounts/electronic bits. very expensive job.
plus these engines are damn reliable when not made by dickheads.

I love new technology, but the sound and power from these engines is pretty good for 40s tech.

My brother in law had similar aggros with his Healy 100/6, months it was out of action, 3 grand spent and still not 100%, he has a V12 Etype thats overheating as well, trouble is hes been topping it up with tap water and no anti freeze plus its boiled over many times, not good on those, suspect its fooked, should sell it and by a modern sports car that is actually quick, handles and doesnt make you look a tool !

my car is fast and handles and is damn sexy looking. pulls the bitches too when the windows are up and theres glare on them.

'pulls the bitches too when the windows are up and theres glare on them.'

Still looking for love then !

Get an engineers report on the engine with a statement that the work was not to of a satisfactory standard and then either talk to the companyor take them to court.

Thats sounds like a real con job rebuild to me, must have had the YTS lad doing it. I think it is disgusting to have an enegine get into a state like that in such a short time. It must have been in a hell of a stae when you got it back.

As suggested, I would get an engineer's report on the wreck engine and go for the firm, maybe through the Office of Fair Trading or whatever.

Good luck

Les
