Back Ups?

Hi all in Computer Related ..... you might not have heard of me, which could be to my advantage ;)

My father in law is asking my "How does he back-up his system info.?"

For example - if he lost his hard drive, or partition, is there anyway to restore all the system settings? I told him to use restore, but not sure if thats right?

Any pointers??

Pete

A combination of norton ghost, or nero and some blank DVD's would back up the entire partition in DOS to an image file (out of windows). This is then put on multiple DVDs.

If the partition on the hard disk gets damaged, you can use ghost (with a bootable cd/floppy) to restore the DVD images and return the computer to its backed up state.

Pete,

what is the problem with his computer? or does he just want to back up??

What operating system?

Use Acronis True image (works for me !) or Norton Ghost:

Agree with all the stuff above, but we know full well who you are Mr Lewis ;) :p :D

I've never done a full system backup  I just backup my important data, and if the computer goes belly up (which has happened once), I just rebuild it as I have all my original disks for the software, and then just copy back my important data. It's probably easier using one of the above options though.

I use a customised DVD with every program on it and a batch runner that inputs all my serials for all programs including nero, office 2003, mcaffee etc.

About 50 minutes for everything.

How old is your F.I.L!!! If you're 77, then he must be close to 100!!!

I'd tell him you've done it anyway, and go and empty his catheter bag ;)

Otherwise, as the above have said ;)

I'd suggest the IT version of a Knocklink Pete. It monitors noises from the hard disk and flashes up red LEDs if it's about to fail. Recommended - no IT professional would be without it.

He is worried about the dishonour of losing the family history and important files ........ he would have to make the ultimate sacrifice and thats not fair!

Surely with his Thai contacts, he can get you all sorts of black-market software as you're too tight to buy it ;)
