this might be a silly Q but how can i tell if mines de catted ?

ok my friend was under my bonnet other day mentioned my downpipe looked different, might be decatted? but i think i recal him saying there is a lambda sensor going to it?????

am i gonna be in the ****e come mot next week?

GrahamG 09 February 2006 09:47 AM

the cat is massive. Decat will just be a plan old pipe. got any pic's? what car? you might have a centre cat...

G.

bigmacandfries 09 February 2006 09:48 AM

its a 1995 sti

GrahamG 09 February 2006 09:54 AM

well it will only have one cat on the downpipe. you should be able to see from the top.

bigmacandfries 09 February 2006 09:56 AM

hmmn well looks like i might not have one then, as looks like no huge cat to me. bugger spose i need to get a exhaust now :(

GrahamG 09 February 2006 09:59 AM

where are you? you can borrow mine. you can also tell by looking under... you will see a pipe that's not looking standard... a cat downpipe has a metal shield...

G.

bigmacandfries 09 February 2006 10:13 AM

just done some research, so my car definatly doesnt have a centre cat? if i have got a decat downpipe it seems easier to bolt up a centre cat?

or have i been missunderstanding??

i might just remove the decat and put a cat back on it, i will go outside shortly and have a squiz at it but its cold and im not dressed yet lol (day off)

GrahamG 09 February 2006 10:20 AM

the car won't have a centre cat. i would put a downpipe cat on for the MOT. or find a friendly tester...

GrahamG 09 February 2006 04:59 PM

yep, you would see if you did. it's massive.

If you based in Surrey your welcome to borrow mine.

G.

bigmacandfries 09 February 2006 06:17 PM

thanks for the kind offer but im 40 odd mins away, are cat downpipes dear sec hand to buy?

are decats worth anything to sell?

ill have to sort somin as it will faile emissions, i have got a good mot bloke but dont think hed pass it for me i

Houghton 09 February 2006 06:23 PM

You're better off just fitting a centre cat for the MOT, or permanent if you're that concerned :)

Sight easier than messing with the d/p.

bigmacandfries 09 February 2006 06:26 PM

a center cat from a impreza i presume?

i havent looked under mine yet for all i know its got one lol

it won't have one... unless it was fitted by the last owner.. but why would they do that and take the downpipe out....

If your centre is the original OE, you'll need to remove it to see if it's a cat I made the mistake of assuming the 'lump' was a cat but it's a resonator on the STi classics. If there's a mesh across the inlet side of the lump, it's a cat.

bigmacandfries 09 February 2006 07:13 PM

funny thing is i knew the last owner he from here and he put it in for mot and it failed but not on emissions, i bought it no mot from him in nov and ive only just got round to starting it now, weird as i know he never swapped exhausts etc

bigmacandfries 11 February 2006 02:07 PM

by any chance anything under here resemble a cat ???

bigmacandfries 11 February 2006 03:28 PM

really? that would be great if it was

are you sure its not just the resonator box some people have mentioned that looks like a cat?

rigga 11 February 2006 05:14 PM

looks like a resonator box to me....my jdm wagon had the same

bigmacandfries 11 February 2006 05:34 PM

JDM Wagons only have one CAT anyway, that's in the downpipe.

The centre as you say is a resonator.

Rob

bigmacandfries 11 February 2006 06:18 PM

i havent got a wagon and exhaust was changed the other year my pics are asking if one can be seen , maybe one was put in for the last mot

Iwan 11 February 2006 06:32 PM

If it's a 1995, does he even need a cat on there? When did the law change to make them compulsory?

bigmacandfries 11 February 2006 07:14 PM

yes i will have to have a cat for mot

hence my dilema, but im not gonna go buy one if someones already fitted one underneith

surely someone must be able to compare these pics with there own classic exhaust from memory ?

It looks like it has a center cat. My decatted classic looks different.

You are right thats a resonator box, just checked my old center with original cat, the cat would have been to the right just after the resonator on the top pic but cant be seen, i only saw that pic, the second shows clearly that there are no cat to the left of the resonator.

my bad

bigmacandfries 11 February 2006 08:22 PM

so whats the other box then? ive got two resonators?

the bottom pick you can see the two box's well just a little bit of the first one lol

scooby-tc 11 February 2006 08:33 PM

why dont you just go to a local garage and have an emissions test, they are free and will put your mind at rest
