Bonnet popped open....

At 130:( On a track obviously, has this happened to anyone else before? Seems to be locked ok now but it's freaked me out abit! Could've been messy if it came open all the way.
It's a 03 sti, is this another known problem?

Cheers.

David.

I know it can be quite common on the classics, happened to me a few times. Fixed it by adjusting the bonnet catch.

richiewong 09 February 2006 12:02 PM

Yep happened to me, 04 WRX.

In the car with a mate then sh1t myself BANG as the bonnet popped:(
Luckily the release catch held the bonnet down, as I slowed down and pulled over to shut it properly.

pippyrips 09 February 2006 12:52 PM

i know anything above 100mph (on a track) and a newage STI bonnet buffets a hell of a lot. Understandable really given the size of the scoop but it's un-nerving for a while! - it's never come lose though

VXRBOY 09 February 2006 12:55 PM

Used to happen to me a lot on both my WRX's, What a good car:norty:

Happend to me once 03sti in the first week of buying it, and never occured again.
I now give the bonnet a push on the front lip. Becareful though these bonnets are aluminium.

Cheers guys. So it's not worth taking it back to the dealers then? Just something i need to keep an eye on.

VXR boy- I'm assuming that's a astra VXR you have. How do you find it compared to a scoob? I was thinking about ordering one but i can't bring myself to get rid of my sti at the moment.

Cheers.

David.

VXRBOY 09 February 2006 04:41 PM

This is going to be followed by a post from someone saying they have slept with my mum (sgcooby) But the VXR is a better car than the WRX, faster and better quality, but if you have an STI i would probably keep it if you just want out and out speed. All pro's and con's it depends what what you want out of a car.

David - please just use the search and type VRX, you will find every post by him telling you how they are the best fwd car (if the the best car) ever!!!

Or if you don't wanna use the search, here is how his response will go......The Astra VXR is so much better than a *insert swearword* WRX or ony other fwd car come to think, anyone who disagrees with me is a *swear* *swear again* and should go back to school. All Impreza's are *sware sware sware* and you are all *swear*. (and i have more money than you, you *sware*!!!)

(or words to that effect) :D

simo 09 February 2006 06:24 PM

never happened to me but the bonnet does lift at the corners a lot at speed.

BTW saw a VXR Astra today on the road, looks :thumb:

jay knowles 09 February 2006 06:30 PM

Happened on mine 04STI at 110mph,adjusted catch never done it again. When i close the bonnet i just drop it from about 18"seems to do the job.JASON

320bhp 09 February 2006 07:15 PM

I always worried bout the same thing happening to me, so to eliminate the problem fitted bonnet pins.

JamieMacdonald 09 February 2006 07:23 PM

I had the bonnet flip fully open on a car I was driving - can't believe it didn't smash the screen/dent the roof, but it bent the bonnet hinges so badly that it wouldn't shut again. Scary experience, and that was only at 40mph - couldn't see a thing!

I'm aware of this happening to at least one Scooby - left a nice dent in the roof! :(

BTW:- are those bonnet pins legal on a road car?

Crosstalk 09 February 2006 07:37 PM

My 05 bonnet lifts at 60mph, especially in a cross wind, so it obscures the joing between it and the wing. Seems to be a bigger than normal gap between the front grille and the bonnet too, maybe letting air in. May I should get it adjusted at next service...

TREG 09 February 2006 07:53 PM

At a 130 my windscreen rubber seal jumped out!
Folded right back over, damaging the roof and side of the car!
£120 later,the seal was replaced.(1999 classic turbo)

B0DSKI 09 February 2006 07:55 PM

My 03 STi done the same thing @ 50 Mph. just like i'd pulled the bonnet release, luckily it never flew right open, managed to pull over and give it a slam shut. Mind u it does buffer when going 80Mph plus loads.

mickyjeff 10 February 2006 10:22 AM

legal? had no probs from the local plod and have been pulled by traffic, he didnt say anything, used to use these rallying, what i will say about them they are alloy and as far as i know if i hit you the pin would shear off, having said that there will be loads of people on here with an opinion of their own maybe someone has been done for having these fitted.
mick :)

RAZ492 10 February 2006 12:01 PM

:-(

Happened to me at 70mph, smashed screen and big dent in the roof. £30 later all fixed, lucky i was driving my ****-box citroen at the time LOL.

Raz.

Chelspeed 10 February 2006 12:42 PM

Happened to Seb Loeb on Rally Sweden.

Zuby 10 February 2006 03:18 PM

only last week (on a private road ofcourse) when travelling at 120ish mph, i can hear what sounds like a humming noise or what can only be described as a faint horn noise :wonder: . Its an 03 Sti ppp...

Has anybody else experianced this

I only ask because I know they are very fussy about things which could cause additional injury to pedestrians in an impact (as if being hit by a big lump of metal isn't bad enough ;) ).

Not saying they should be either, but just wondered. I'm sure they're ok then... :thumb:

not saying there legal! pretty sure they are, plod round here in stockton on tees dont seem to have a problem with them, in an accident, point taken they are funny about additional bits on your car and i know when im am somewhere esle some plod will be funny about them, but i tell you what the bonnet on my 05 STI really comes up at speed, mechanic for thirty years folks properly adjusted and all that. another point when in the lakes last year the lakes rally or whatever was on and we watched the cars, a lot of which had the said pins and my understanding is they have to road legal to take part
cheers mick :norty:

don't put them in the oven - very risky

better way is to simply heat up the mastic holding the front and back part of the lens up with a hairdryer - far safer way to do things:)

There was a guy on here who forgot his lights were in the oven - when he came back it was melted!
