ADSL Router HELP PLEASE!
 

I would appreciate some help from anyone about a new wireless ADSL network!

I would like to connect my laptop (Vaio with built in wireless) to an ADSL router. Would also like to connect a printer to the router. There are no other PC's to connect.

Called several places, but no-one seems to know what to go for.......???

What hardware do you have at the moment? Just the laptop and printer?

Do you have an ADSL modem, if so what ports does it have on the back (USB, RJ45 ethernet)?

I take it you are looking for a router (or router with built in ADSL modem) with a printer port / USB port on it so that you can print from anywhere?

What's your budget? Any preference to manufacturer?

I have a speedtouch adsl modem at the mo - no free port on the back.

I think a need an ADSL router with print server...? The idea is to browse wirelessly on the laptop, and to also be able to print from the laptop.

After a known brand - Belkin/d-link/netgear.....

Netgeat appear to do a fly router, which is supposed to be better...???

I don't mind paying is it is reallibale and works well!!!

How are you going to connect the printer to the router by cable or use wireless?

Does the modem connect to your PC via an ethernet RJ-45 connector, or a telephone style RJ-11 connector? Here's a pic of the two :

There don't appear to be many affordable all in one packages that do your wireless routing, ADSL modem AND print server. There is a USRobotics one that does everything but I don't know if it's good or bad.

Depends what route you want to go down really. You might be able to connect your modem into a wireless router with print server and then connect the router to your PC. You could also get a separate wireless print server so your printer could be anywhere else in the house and have it talk to the router wirelessly, and the router could be a standalong router connected to your ADSL modem (if connections allow) or you could get a new wireless router with built in ADSL modem and firewall.

How many bits of kit do you want to have to plug in? My initial thoughts would be to go for a wireless router with ADSL modem and firewall built in, and buy a separate wireless print server. Looking at the prices, the US Robotics one is about the same price, if not more, than if you bought the two separate items that I mention. It would just mean that you have two wireless 'boxes' instead of one.

I've personally gone with Netgear and had no troubles, but other people have. Linksys tend to be quite good these days and I'm sure other people will offer advice on best manufacturers :) Belkin got a bad report from one of my missus' work colleagues but that could have been a one off.

Good point jay, does the printer have built in wireless capability, or do you have to connect it 'the old fashioned way' with a cable? ;)

After reading your thoughts, I think I would like to just get a good ADSL router, and leave the printer for the moment.

Which would give best range and speed?

Any easier to set-up or use?

Buy a netgear or d-link mate and some of those should have usb printer port built in...

One example you could think about is:

Buy the following
Netgear 1 eth port, 1 usb port adsl modem on ebuyer, under £40

In addition then you could put a wireless / 4 port eithernet WGT624 on the back of the dsl modem.
