What crank...
 

Engine out this weekend... finally... gonna strip it myself now too...
I'm expecting to have to replace the bottom end bearings... and gonna have to do something about the crank... as its not recommended grinding them up...
what would be best to replace my STi ver4 crank with??? don't wanna spend loads of money on one... just want something as new thats gonna be up to the job...
Think I've seen somewhere people fitting later STi8 cranks... take it this would be a straight swap??? any info appreciated... also any idea on what price I should expect to pay for one...?

If it was me , I would phone Mark at Lateral Performance, He has been real helpfull with mine , chees Alan.

Your STi V4 is a phase one block, and the main thrust bearing is in the middle of the crank. On the later phase two cars, the main thrust is at the end of the crank. In standard form, the two aren't compatible.

If you really wanted to fit the later crank, the phase one block can be modified to take it, but I'm not certain that there would be much benefit.


Chances are, if you've damaged the crank, you will also have damaged one or more rods. Standard rods are pretty cheap to replace though.

The most important thing with a re-build after a bearing failure, is to make sure you strip down, and thoroughly clean EVERYTHING. That includes the heads.

All the blanking plugs/bolts need to be removed, and the oil ways flushed, on both block, and heads. I would also flush the oil/water cooler, and if anything comes out, replace it, because "if" debrie has got to it, you can't guarantee to flush it out of the internal core. I would also flush the turbo, and feed pipe too.

If you are practically minded, and have patience, I'm sure you can do it.

What would you recommend I do about a replacement crank....? the car runs fine... its just got a noisy bottom end bearing... Hence why its been kept off the road/ not used...
I'm just thinking the crank will probabley be marked, and as I don't know what was done to it when it was rebuilt in sept 04... I'm just thinking of replacing the crank...
Its got uprated rods and pistons fitted... Suppose I will know soon enough...

Are you sure it's not just piston slap from forged pistons ?

Is it bad when cold, but gets better when it's hot ? or is it noisy all the time.

It rattles under load... bad....! Started in sept 05... been off the road since...

Well I guess the only way to know for sure, is to strip it, like you say.

Would it be easier to get a complete STi8 bottom end, and bolt this to my heads... If my uprated pistons and rods are ok in my ver4 block, will these be ok to fit into the STi8 block? along with a new uprated oil pump?
