FITTING GEAR BOX/REAR DIFF
 

Is it possible to fit a phase 1 JAP RA box and diff into a 98 UK TURBO if so what else might need replacing.I know it will be noisey and the top end will go but it's only a weekend toy.ANY INPUT WILL BE GREATFULLY RECEIVED.thanks Jeremy:D

as a complete gearbox it will not drop straight in, unless you have the matching rear diff also.......................

you could also simply use the cluster from the RA only and the crown wheel/pinion set & centre diff. from your UK box

You shouldn't loose any top end when changing to an RA box, as 1-4 gears are type C grade (close ratio) and the 5th gear is standard B type. It will pull like a train with only about a 600rpm drop between gears up to a ton, then you have the standard 5th gear. To give you an example, whilst driving mine in 4th gear at 40mph, i'm reving at 3000rpm just when the turbo cuts in. It's much more fun to drive than a standard gearbox. It isn't that noisey, I just have a slight straight cut whinning sound from mine, not sure if this is the norm or not.

scoobyboy34 are you running an ra or is it an implant into another car in other words do you redline at 7k or 8k

It's an RA, 8k I beleive.

sounds more like the later type-R & STi RA type box's.................i presumed the post was about an early type RA box which is extremely short.................

"555red98".....if this confuses you then you no doubt need some help on the practicalities involved..........the box your looking at uses the "wrong" centre diff and probably front diff ratio also...........will cause all sorts of problems with handling and transmission if fitted as is!!

'if' Jeremy gets his way, me and a couple of others with experience will be assisting him, the box he has in mind is from an early RA, we would need a matching rear diff clearly...... it's just a case of not using all the old bolts isn't it..?? the early box only uses four..?? also the starter motor is slightly different in it's fixing isn't it...??

on a 98 then the housing will most likely be the "early" type although could be either......................

depends on what your after, we quite often re-build boxes to suit std rear diff............
