need to supply my own modem to go broadband, can i use one from a BT business pack?

as above really, mate gave me a BT business single pack which has a modem which i can use.

can i just plug this in and off it goes? want to go onto metronet and i have to pay them to activate the line but it seems the modem is tied to BT?

as you can tell, i'm not too clued up with these sort of things,so could someone give me some pointers as to how to use this modem, or do i need to get an 'unlocked' modem (if there is such a thing!)

ta:)

Naw a modem should just be a modem, plug it in and let it search the installation disc for the driver rather than installing all the BT stuff on the disc. then you should be able to put any ADSL login name and password from any supplier.
