Clutch - was rumbling, press pedal in quiet, now pedal in gives horrible rattle!

Clutch noises...

The clutch has been a bit noisy for a long time now. Initially at idle in neutral there would be a rumble / knocking sound which disappeared when pressing the clutch pedal in. :wonder:
I loaned the car to a mate for a weekend and when it came back the clutch had judder reasonably badly so I just thought that it was now finally on its way out. After a couple of weeks the judder went :luxhello:

Just recently pressing the clutch pedal in leads to a whirring / rattling sound which then disappears when the clutch pedal is released :Suspiciou - Is this the bearing finally given up completely?

There is no problem with driving the car, no clutch slip at all - although there is a little of the clutch judder returned. Can this lead to any further problems? - how imminently should I get the work done?

It'll be the thrust bearing!!

I had a rumble at idle, went when pedal was pressed. So, got someone to remove the clutch and re-assemble using a brand new Thrust Bearing, and all is now sound!! :D Bearing is about £90 from a dealer though!! + the cost to fit it works out quite expensive.

TBH you may aswell get the clutch changed whilst its in bits if you can stretch to that expense.

by thrust bearing I take it you mean release bearing?

the thrust bearing is in the engine and what the crank acts against when the clutch is pressed, you dont want this to be the problem!

Release bearing on the other hand should be less than £250 all in

Sachs makes a releasebearing identical to the OEM, It's good and cheaper.

Yes, I meant the release bearing. Calling it a 'thrust' bearing is a bad habit of mine! :)

OK... I've taken it to TEG... poor little thing out there in the cold :(
They are going to replace the clutch, do a 60k service, give me an estimate on body & if the gears are still iffy sort that as well... :Suspiciou

- anyway hopefully she'll be 'good-as-new' in a week or so... :D
