Have any of you 'Locals' got any info/Tips for a virgin spectator to this awesome looking event ? http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

Some 'very' waterproof clothes and loads of Midge repelant. Oh and, travel sickness pills for the ferry trip.

Make sure you pick up a leaflet with the road closure times - there are so few roads on the island its easy to get stuck somewhere you don't want to be with no way of getting to where you do want to be! Apart from the Fionnport - Craignure - Salen - Tobermory A road all the other roads on the island (apart from the deadends http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/rolleyes.gif ) are used as stages.
Bear in mind that when the road closing time arrives it is technically illegal to even walk down the road! No real need to point you at any good spectator bits - there are too many! I'd agree with John about the waterproofs and midge repelant - it can also get very cold by 2 or 3 in the morning (some marshals ended up with hypothermia a few years ago). Anyone else going to this ?
This looks pretty good ... How's about we organise a group accomodation booking etc, and make a bit of an event of it. I'm sure we could get a good turnout. Anyone interested ? Andrew. |

Getting accommodation will be difficult, worse for a group, as most places permanently booked year to year for the rally week.
Self-catering is better for the unsociable hours but the few left are currently looking for a ransom to rent. You would think that they would be welcoming visitors after a bad tourist spell with f+m but some are still greedy. There is nowhere to buy superunleaded, if you need. The Oban-Craignure ferry will be full on some trips on the Friday and Sunday but try booking. Lochaline-Fishnish is easier/cheaper. Best idea is to camp out in a Land Rover. Pick your location and drive off-road. Remember the beer, a frying pan and 2 sleeping bags (per person!). If you are driving on the island and a Land Rover 110 appears in your mirror move over quick....no Subaru slows me down....! |
Cheers for the info guys.........keep it coming.
aar, Your obviously well up on the event, would you advise camping or scooby sleeping ? 555 |
.......finding a spot to camp is easy (in daylight!)and great if the weather's fine but the wind and rain can be grim...no fun getting up every 15 minutes to knock in the tent pegs....!! We've seen it 4 degrees below freezing one year on the west side with white frost on the roads - in October!! Staying in the car is a better bet - it's got lights and a heater! If you do go this route best to pick your locations before the event starts so that you know where you're heading before the road closures.
