overheating
 

hey just this minute bought a scooby wrx, drove it home 30 miles everything fine, got it home and it started to over heat. im letting it cool down now before i check the levels but anything i can look for, hope i aint just been sold a dud!

That's a shame mate. I always try and give details of my car if posting a thread of a technical nature. What kind of car is it - classic/ newage, import/ UK car, is it modified? This will help peole try and diagnose (and hopefuly prognose) your problem. If you bought from a dealer, go straight back. If it was a private sale, ask the previous owner for some details. It may have been a problem that he/ she had. Could be several things IMHO. Good luck and welcome to the world of Subarus!!!!!!!!!!!

sorry, its a 94 reg wrx turbo import

here goes:

when driving on the motor way it will quite happily sit half way on the temp gauge! then all of a sudden it will rise to the top for a couple of minutes, then fall back down to the half way mark and be fine.

do i have a faulty thermostat??? or do they all open at high temps?

Check the radiator on the drivers side. Its a common fault for them to get a hair line crack on the end tank and leak.

Are you maintaining your water level after a long drive?

yeah mate, just got it home, let it cool down and topped it up. seemed to be at its fullest like but i dunno, im taking it down asperformance tomorow to see if they can have a good look at it.

Take it, that it had lost its water if you needed to top it up.

Make sure you squeeze the radiator bottom hose (passenger side of radiator) to the release air, then top it up. Start it up and let it idle monitoring the temp guage and see what happens.

Mine didnt empty straight away it took a couple of days when the rad was leaking.

Where abouts are you?

One of my best mates is a Clifford Installer. (He does them at nice discount prices)

changed the thermostat and its still over heating,

would the heaters blow hot at all if it was the head that was gone?

as its blowing hot when its near the top of the temp scale but not blowing hot before that.

what can i look for next? i also noticed that under the bottle which has a yellow lid and has coolant wrote on it has a pipe underneath which isnt connected and when it gets hot pours out of there. should it be connected to anything, looks as if it has been at one point as its got a jubilee clip on it or is it just a overflow???

please help me :(

i would try emptying it and make sure there is a good mix of coolent and water.

Is there any sign's of leaks?

you have a air pocket somewhere as all ready said drain car drivers side bottom of the rad theres a tap mine did this when the rad had a split before the water started pissing out could be he's filled it up but airs been left and its just working its way round

Make sure when you fill it up you have the fan's on full heat inside.. keep checking to make sure it's getting hot.
