how fast is fast

ok we all see on here how fast is this and how fast is that but how fast do u actually think fast is
ie i dont think my car is fast but others do ??

flynnstudio 23 January 2006 11:11 AM

well it would seem during daylight hours 60mph on a road with a 60mph speed limit is now seemingly 20mph too fast for 95% of the people on the road...The roads are filling up with gerry-hat-tricks driving exceeding slowly...I really hope when I'm 80 I still drive with a little passion, hopefully still inducing teenagers to flash their lights at me when I overtake them at 60mph....PLEASE don't let me become a passionless decrepit old fart in a corsa...PLEASE!!!(sorry rant over!)

but IMO anything exceeding or approaching 200bhp per tonne is FAST...

frayz 23 January 2006 11:23 AM

if youve never been in anything near fast then yes a 380bhp scoob is fast. TBH its not slow my any persons normal means.

But then how fast is fast?

A top fuel drag car does 0 to 100mph in 0.86sec!!!! (FASTER THAN THE NASA SPACE SHUTTLE)

It also does 0 to 300+mph in 4.5 sec.

How fast is fast you ask?

struv 23 January 2006 12:39 PM

my motorbike is faster than my car !!! but its got no heater so wont be going anywhere for a while

basically, you get a highly tuned v8, you supercharge it, you tune it some more, to the point it can do only about 10 miles inbetween rebuilds, then run it on nitromethane and alcohol instead of petrol and you have yourself a 8000bhp engine

strap that to a ladder chassis with a seat, and few bits of carbon fibre, and you have an 8000bph car that weighs like 500kg

these things are INSANE, but crucially, only any good on a drag strip :)

I'd have it in the twisties ;)

16vmarc 23 January 2006 02:17 PM

I still think a standard Impreza is fast (not that mines standard :norty: ).

Anything around 6sec 0-60 and 1/4mile in under 15seconds is pretty nippy in my opinion.

davyboy 23 January 2006 02:26 PM

Exactly - once a car can do 100 in 15 secs or less then a lot comes down to driver.

na motorbikes are the kiddies for exeleration my bike will do 100 in about 6 seconds would be faster but it only does 90 in second

Then it's BHP per ton rather than just raw BHP...

Eckmcmann 24 January 2006 12:49 AM

IMO any form of turbo scoob is fast... and it really pi55es me off when you get people coming on and saying "scoobs aren't fast anymore"... rubbish! it is a very quick car for the size and weight, and just because their car is faster they say its slow. does that mean that when a ferrari cruises past their car that its slow as well?? no...just means its not unbeatable. sorry for moving away from topic, and rant over:D

billythekid 24 January 2006 08:18 AM

How fast is fast?

Well all you need to do is look at the power of the car, its weight and its drag co-efficent (and gearing for top speed but this is no problem so long as Vmax is less than max power or rev limit in top).

For example, Caterham 7, 500kg, 200bhp, 0-60 in 4 seconds. However its top speed is around 140mph due to its very poor aerodynamics, infact most Caterham owners report a "brick wall" at 110mph.

A scooby that can do 0-60 in 4 seconds will have around 350bhp ish, and its top speed will be closer to 160mph. But it weighs 1400kg.

A standard C5 Corvette has 350bhp, yet can top 175mph, it weighs 1500kg, but its Cd is very low.

In other words it all depends on the car.

bbigman2000 24 January 2006 08:26 AM

cars arent fast !!

The fastest thing ive owned was my K1 gsxr1000, of all the cars and bikes ive owned through the years, nothing has blown my mind like that bike, it will live with me forever, every single time I took it out without fail, I would just be screaming inside my helmet with sheer amazement at the power available to me.

If you want fast thats what you need !!

davyboy 24 January 2006 08:28 AM

Going fast around corners is important too ;)

bbigman2000 24 January 2006 08:32 AM

very true, and I have raced my own gsxr 1000 against my P1 !! yeh true

My mate who is a top racer in scotland on a gsxr 1000 was on my bike, and you would not believe how close things were, I would pull right up to him on the corners, and then he would just blitz me out of the other side.

I had my P1 reading 160mph on the clock and he cruised past me (just) flinging a stone right into my windscreen and cracking it !!!!!

TopBanana 24 January 2006 08:34 AM

If you're not used to it, a faster car feels fast for a week or two and then you get used to it

billythekid 24 January 2006 08:35 AM

IMHO a high output Caterham 7 is about the fastest thing you can buy these days. I have had loads of mates with R1s and various other sports bikes saying they would paste me cross country but they dont realise just how quick the 7 is to 100mph and how much corner speed you can carry.

On the bike you need to really slow down for the corner where as the 7 will just carry most of its speed through the corner. The brakes on the 7 are also very good, which makes for some very late braking.

In a straight line not much is going to touch a bike, but over your average B road its not the best choice of machine.

The title post of this thread is an example of:

"I want to brag about my car's power but I need an excuse. I also want to appear cool and blasé about it"

Not always. My 265bhp 03 WRX PPP was way quicker out in the Yorkshire Dales recently than a mate in a 420bhp classic. I also stayed glued to the @r$e of another mate in a 305bhp STi PPP across Strines Moor, and a guy with over 550bhp confessed that there would be no way he could keep up with my car. On a recent test drive a guy I know whom owns an STi PPP TSL333 pushing 325bhp confirmed that there was no way he could have the confidence to use his cars power like I could in mine. You can have too much power, to the point where the chassis and suspension, and especially the brakes can become overloaded making the car difficult to drive. I have concentrated on just these points rather than becoming blindly obsessed with out 'n out power since getting my Scoob, and in real world driving conditions it is now one outstanding machine. I could now consider adding more power, but as it's for sale that's up to the next owner

bootsy 24 January 2006 09:05 PM

brother inlaw has a striped out Scirocco with some sort of highly modded audi rs4/6 engine( not sure what it is really) in it .it set up for drag racing ive seen him race at santa pod in the last couple years and hes not doing to bad .but watching him race got to say there alot of cars out there quicker.then he let me have go in it(it's road legal just).after stalling it about 8 time and getting use to dropping the clutch at about 7000 rev .fooking hell its quick. how quick no idea i never looked at the speedo once .but he did say at 160 slow down. scarey car not good on corners . and this car dosnt go a month out something going wrong:D

MickWrx 24 January 2006 10:01 PM

how fast is fast ?

I guess fast is when your sat in a performance bucket seat holding tightly to the steering wheel, after engaging first gear.

you squint slightly before aggressively dropping the clutch and nail the throttle pow!! your hear a huge noise snapping metal and you come over all disorientated, then when you open your eyes you find your self in the boot still holding the steering thinking WTF now thats fast :D

wrx bill 25 January 2006 05:45 PM

How long is a piece of string? It's all relative.

I think the current top fuel record(s) are about 4.44 secs elapsed at around 333mph

Using v = u +at that means an average acceleration of
148 m/s = 0 + 4.44xt
= 33.33 m/s^2
or about 3.4g

In fact it will tend to have much higher acceleration at lower speeds because aerodynamic drag is significantly less (increasing as it does by the square of the speed).

To hit 100mph (or 44.704 m/s) in 0.86 seconds it would have to accelerate at an average of 5.3g. The figures quoted by frayz look good to me. Just shows how quick those drag monster accelerate hey?

Dazza's-Atom300 27 January 2006 01:56 PM

I've seen a top fuel do a 4.7 1/4 at the LAs Vegas drag strip and believe me the word EXPLOSION doesn't describe it! they do reach 100mph in under 1 second and hit 300+ mph 3.5 seconds later... watching them spinning up 3/4ers the way down the strip is insane!

I've seen a 4.7 at the pod at just over 300mph in 2004, can't wait for b/hol weekend end of may!
