Calling the 'ring guys!

Folks

4 of us are planning a trip around europe for the WC2006. On Mon 19th June we would like to hire 2 x 911's (avis seem to do them for 199 euro each!!! - what is the catch?) and do the 'ring.

Does anyone know if it is open on that day, a friend has looked but says the timetable isn't published that far ahead?

Cheers
Steven

Take a look here regarding car hire:- http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/carhire.html

However the 19th is the day after a 4 day event at the ring www.24h-Rennen.de so I wouldn't say it's the best choice of dates (they might be doing something to the track the day after), however can't do anything until dates are out, probably at the end of Feb.

Some Dates of events at the ring itself (not just Nordschleife) http://www.nuerburgring.de/2_eventst...index.html?L=1

cheers steve

dont want to do anything dodgy, we just want to hire 2 x 911's and do the ring. don't mind large excess as not planning on acting like idiots, just having fun. has anyone hired from avis? not sure if they'd be happy with 4 25 year olds turning up to take to 911's, might be best to book them seperately?

still have a pic of your 911 Turbo as my desktop from your PH post :)

It seems Avis have an age limit of 30 years old for the Prestige cars :(

http://www.avisprestige.com/rates/ra...p?make=porsche

Some firms also state you cant take the car on "deresticted toll roads" so make sure you check the small print :)

Thats a classic pic of my car, glad you liked it, had to clean it for hours! ;) ;)

midget1500 18 January 2006 11:22 AM

looked on the actual german avis site - seems to be 25 years old?

and this looks promising...

The small print will say don't usem them on the Ring, and they will have a max mileage.

As Steve said, the track will not be open all that week, there will be loads of armco to replace after the 24 hour race.

Gutmann pug 18 January 2006 11:31 AM

If your looking to hire from Cologne airport be warned ..... Cars hired you cannot guarrenty you get the actual car you order. I went with a friend who specifically ordered a 3ltr mer coupe thingy and he got an A2 people carrier. You can order what you like but its what keys are in the draw on the day which specifies what you get.

Its true to say their are 911's there, as there are crossfires, Z3's, 530D's BUT and its a big BUT they hardly ever, if ever go to English people.

From experience a friend ordered a 530D on 8 occasions and didnt get it once. However one time he went he didnt order it and got one. Keys in the draw effect.

The 911's are also on a limited mileage, the number I cant remember, but the trip to the 'ring' and back takes up your limit. Any additional miles have to be payed for at a high rate.
I believe there is also a note on the 911's stating they cannot be driven on the ring........

Hiring cars from Cologne is a lottery im afraid, if thats what you had planned of course.

I've no doubt there will be a raft of exceptions in the policy - I can't believe you are the first people to think of doing that!

And as the Ring has a habit of damaging cars, if your insurance doesn't cover you, would you like to be held responsible for the cost of repairs to a 911?

ian_sadler 18 January 2006 12:11 PM

We hired a 911 to collect from Hann and ended up with an SL350, still not bad.

The limit was about 1,000 Km IIRC and after driving to the ring doing a "few" laps we had to take the car back and get something else :(

midget1500 18 January 2006 12:47 PM

cheers guys, keep the info coming...

brendan et al, we're not the 1st - look, this guy from channel4 did it...

Steven,
Can I ask an obvious question? Have you ever driven the ring before and if not then why do you want a 911? :)

Floyd 18 January 2006 01:06 PM

Cos he wouldn't be seen dead in a dodgy Ford? ;)

RayC 18 January 2006 01:08 PM

you need to watch out for industry pool weeks too, it will be shut from 8-17:30, i currently can see the following weeks are booked

12,13,14,15,20,25,26,28,29,34,35,38,39,41,42,43

Weekends that are booked

18,22,24,29,33

hopefully that should see you through, bear in mind the Arnco costs 600 euros a metre if you bash into it.:eek2:

May well be in a 911 though if he's never driven the ring before :(

davyboy 18 January 2006 01:40 PM

As it will be closed when he goes, I guess it doesn't matter.

Gutmann pug 18 January 2006 01:44 PM

Might mean another lengthy closure if he goes when its open though ;-(

Gary

I reckon the Rover 414 Emma drove was a good learning tool for a novice? A lot cheaper than a 911 too.

midget1500 18 January 2006 01:53 PM

well, we were gonna drive our own cars over but ferry costs etc was too much.

Want to buy a 911 soon so it seems like a good way to test drive one and to combine that with the 'ring seems like a good idea - i wont be going for lap records, i've seen tons of video footage and read lots about it, certainly not a place for novices trying to be fast!

I've done lots of track days and compete in hillclimbs so no stranger to track / fast road driving.

If the ring is closed that week it'll just be for some fun on the autobahns then. Might be able to go the friday of that week if its open.

cheers for all the info guys - much appreciated.

oh, how much is it per lap? IIRC 15 euro?

Gutmann pug 18 January 2006 01:57 PM

why not just disconnect the speedo?
Or if you're really stuck you can buy my old Carlton GSI 300024v which will have returned from its own european trip by then.
RWD, 150mph, 200bhp, ideal ring weapon. :)
astraboy.

Slightly off topic and don't want to start new thread, but would love to get one of the Ring Stickers that the used to put on the Spec C(i think), can you get them anywhere or do you have to "do the Ring",i know it's cheating but i would like one without going there.

Thanks in Advance.

Mac

davyboy 18 January 2006 04:00 PM

You need to do the ring, or your car gets stolen.

Floyd 18 January 2006 07:41 PM

No cheating, must do the Ring to earn sticker....and beat Sabine ;)

midget1500 07 February 2006 09:37 AM

rayC - what is an industry pool week? we are there week 25 which you have listed?

this isn't looking good for us :-((((((((((((

also, what's the deal with sabine doing the ring taxi, we'd love to do that as well.

many thanks
steven

Gutmann pug 07 February 2006 10:10 AM

You have to pre-book the ring taxi many months in advance. So if you're looking for a lap then book now. The track does of course have to be open to tourist laps that day else she wont be running. You can also be lucky on rainy days. Some people dont turn up so Sabine can fit you in for a lap. Not guarrenteed though.

The diary on the main site tells you when the track is and isnt open for tourist laps. If it isnt then its envariably being used for either closed track sessions, racing or industry testing. If you're there you can of course watch this going on.

RayC 07 February 2006 01:10 PM

Midget1500 sorry for late reply

industry pool week is when car manufacturers VW, GM, BMW etc have exclusive use of the track from 8 am untill 5.30pm for vehicle testing, the industry pool is a group or motoring manufacturers who pay a large amount of the upkeep towards the Ring and in return get test weeks with no tourists to block testing

sorry if it buggers up your week, it depends if you want to go and see prototype vehciles etc and only get a few laps in every day or like the flexibity of going on when you like, its usually very crowed at 5.30 in IP week though
