carrying on from the "is darts a sport" thread.
Is fishing a sport, I say yes as there is match fishing...

opinions please.

just an excuse to sit and drink beer and sleep outdoors.

why not just go pub and sleep at home :D

i used to fish on a regular basis
and i would say it's not a sport (even though i think it is classed as one)

not sure what you would define it as though if not a sport (cue some wiseass saying boring) it's not a pub game like darts.:D

Saw quite a few fisherman sitting by the river in the rain yesterday.

You have to wonder how bad their home life is when that is preferable to sitting at home in the warm!

Hence the term sport fish, and it isnt a tench :)

If darts is a sport so is fishing.

And PC games :D

Getting eaten by a shark would make it fairly sporting ;)

And some forms of fishing are more sporting than others - i.e. require the participant to actually move in a physically exerting way such as falling into the river, slipping off the harbour wall, putting up the umbrella :D

sport is defined as physical exertion and competition..no mention of blood letting

im a warm weather fisherman myself.:cool: peaceful surroundings, birds tweating, my very own interesting company and the excitement of hooking into that monster of the deep.:) suits me.

Of course it's a sport. Wrestling a 1500lb marlin on 120lb class gear, while strapped into a boat with 2 x 300HP V16 diesels, is no walk in the park you know!

of the fish i,ve caught, i dont see blood running from them at all,

I happened to be channel surfing a while back and tripped across a "enthusiatic" fishing program...they were flying across a lake in a cessna to get to a fishing hole with lots of fancy fish.

I thought "boring" :sleep: and was about to switch over...

but then.....

The plane crashed!!!! I kid you not! :eek: The engine made a few unhealthy rattles, then the pilot started shouting, camera went shakey, and before you know it, all you could see was trees and bushes as it crashed into a forrest!

It may or may not be a sport but it sure is as boring as fook. :D

I fish only for the pot and the fish is despatched rapidly and painlessly.

You say its alright to eat the fish which are caught, but have you thought about the fish dying of slow suffocation when they have been trawled up. And that they are often filetted while still alive? How does that compare with a bit of coarse fishing where the fish are returned alive.
