Need advice about blocks!

I have run into a problem.

I took my sti2 engine out today to fit my new sti3 heads onto it and discovered it was actually an open deck block!

My conundrum is this:

Do i fit the sti3 heads to the open deck and fit my 20g to it and try to make it run.

OR

Do i get a closed deck block and fit the heads and turbo to this?

(am trying to get to around 350lbs.ft after running 320lbs.ft successfully for about a year now, have all the other supporting mods btw)

In other words will an open deck block cope??

Please help
Stuart

the open deck block is good for 400bhp so you should be okay, think HArvey on here was running 500bhp. Check out AndyF's website, sure it confirms it there that even standard internals are good for the 400bhp

fair enough but my other question is it worth putting the sti3 heads on the open deck also?

Ok so tell me is it closed deck and also have forged pistons? If it a good price i may consider it if it only has one of these qualities

An STi3 would have an open deck as standard from the factory, so no reason why you shouldn't fit them. You'll still get the gains of better cams, better flow over your version 2s.

Sorry to hi-jack this thread with what prolly seems a daft question.... can someone please define the difference between an open deck block and a closed desk... are they both the Ej20?

Open deck block

Closed deck block

Both are EJ20's but the closed deck is stronger and was used in most of the JDM 2 litre Imprezas and Legacys until about 1994 (I think) :)

Cheers Tony

As usual you come with the good advice. Decided to stick with the open deck. I popped a piston out tonight and it is defo a forged piston but i will get the rings checked before they go back in.

Onwards and upwards
