head gaskets on a 95 STI

Are they steel as standard? The only STI engine i've taken to bits had steel ones, but all the ebay and motor factor ones aren't.

If they are steel, is it likely they've gone as i'm getting a bit of steam out the back and very slight signs of mayo in the oil.

Where from/how much?

are you on commission? :p

Will do - just need to be sure it's the HG first so maybe try a leakdown test, or since the car is off the road ATM i might just take it to bits for the craic :)

Here's a interesteing question>>......If you have small signs of mayo stains in the oil but the car runs fine,no overheating, do you just need to change the head gaskets or do the whole sending the heads off thing??

You mean to get them skimmed? You should have them checked for flatness any time they have to come off for HGs.

I just check them myself with feelers and a straight edge then if need be the garage down the road can skim.
