Road Tax for 6 Months Period

Hi Guys and Girls,

I renewed my tax on my 2001 Impreza Turbo for another 6 months and the price was £90 and something pence.

The lady had to renew hers at the same time, but it cost her £93 and something pence, for 6 months.

Now, bearing in mind she drives a Mazda MX5 1.8, which is lighter and has less power, is this correct? Or have the DVLA made an error and on who's part?

Cheers and thanks for the help!

Charlie :)

Newer cars are taxed based on their CO2 figures. With older cars it's on engine size. The full rates are at http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/taxation.htm

You can always return your tax disc to get a refund for the unused complete months on it - so if you want 6 months tax, it's cheaper to buy 12 and then send the disc back just before the 6 months is up.

I used to do that all the time when I went away to university - buy a 12 month disc at the start of the holidays, then send it back just before the beginning of term to get a refund for the time it'd be sitting idle in my parents' garage.

She was probably taxing a diesel car which would be £93.50

But this wasn't the case, as I stated...

Cheers for your reply Andy, I didn't realise the DVLA had changed the way in which they taxed cars.
