Wireless networking "AGAIN" HELP

Afternoon all

I have eventually set up :wonder: i think the wireless

Setup is as follows.

Desktop with wi fi card, located to router at other end of room, laptop also connected via wi fi card to router.

This is all connected nicely & has got great connection speed but i cant access the internet on the desktop or the laptop via wireless.

I have had to connect via a hard cable to type this message

Please help as i am at my wits end

Do you have an ip address assigned by the router?

Are you using encryption on the router and are the pc's setup with the correct key?

Can you see the laptop from the pc and visa versa?

What make and model is the router?

Are you using Windows' own wireless setup or a utility provided by the manufacturer?

Answers to the above will help.

As Matt said!

Sounds like your router is setup ok to talk to the outside world, and connecting via an ethernet cable to an ethernet port on both your PC and laptop is fine, but the wi-fi cards in both the PC and the laptop cannot see the router - you should be able to scan and see the wireless router from your desktop of laptop when they are not hard wired in, if neither see you router when you scan then for whatever reason your router is not emitting a signal that the devices can pick up.

Let us know what make and model router and wi-fi cards you are using and it'll help make some sort of decision as to where to start in debugging the system.

Belkin Router with modem & same wi fi card for the Desktop, for the lappy its built in

The rest of the questions i will find out & report back

Top Gear is finished :)

The laptops card is a Winbond W89C33 mPCI 802.11 Wireless LAN Adapter

As above for the router & desktop card.

What i did today was come home, read through the instructions & connect the the router to the phone line, i then carried out the instructions for the desktop card, then i noticed it picked up a signal & speed was 50 mbps & said connected. So i tried to connect to the internet & nothing, said it couldnt find the page.

Tried to connect the laptop & managed to get the wireless all connected on this, same speed. But couldnt connect to the internet either.

I am with BT Broadband, but havent as yet added this onto the laptop.

As for the desktop i used the belkin programme to connect wirelessy & the windows programme i think for the lappy

Both the wi fi cards are picking up a signal

If the router works with a wire connected then the settings are ok there,
Don't install and BT software on either machine and remove if you did.
on the IE toolbar go to tools / internet options / connections tab.
Set to never dial a connection and check "Lan settings" are set to auto.
Reset the router and try again.
Hope it helps a bit.

Connect to your router (using the hardwire). Go to the config page and there should be a config page for encryption.

mike1210 30 December 2005 04:35 PM

id leave encryption for now, 1st things first get them to go out onto the net

what ip address is being given to you by the router when you are connected wirelessly (start > run > cmd > ipconfig /all)

encryption can be a pain on the belkins, some just wont have it.:)
