Why dont we have an insurance disk, like tax?
 

Its prob been asked before but hey

I think it would make it a lot harder for people to get away with having no insurance on the road, im not talking about criminals who could forge them. But people who's insurance has just run out and feel like taking a chance for a day or two.

IMO, its a waste of time and money.

What is wrong with enforcing the submission of information to a central database (of which some is already I believe).

That way, police can still sit with their mobile 'safety' cameras and check to see if the vehicle is insured or not from their warm little seats.

Tax and MoT, TV Licence on computer, why not insurance?

It is a very difficult one to police because of the variables of who is driving what car etc. How would you know that the driver is insured and not driving without being insured if it wasn't their car?

The tax disc is outdated and should really be scrapped in favour of a (very) small %tax premium on fuel (as if there isn't enough tax on fuel :mad: ). That way those who use the roads most, pay the most. A large portion of the revenue raised by tax discs must go into their supply. The secure printing of a complex design to combat forgers, the work involved in the sale and issue by the Post Office and the people paid to check them randomly on the street (Police and wardens) must eat into the £6bn raised.

MOT, tax and insurance details are now held on databases instantly accessable by the Police, and with ANPR becoming the prefered method of crime investigation ('cos ALL motorists are criminals :rolleyes: ) then it will become very difficult to evade any of the responsibilities required for legal use of the highway.

I think the main point is this:

Even when the irresponsible idiots with no insurance actually get caught, the penalty is usually less than the premium they would have paid! Now how is that a deterrant? They should take their car off them and crush it every time. The mindless idiots would then soon run out of money and then we'd all be a lot safer on the roads - and with cheaper insurance to boot.
