Why not just buy a USB external HDD and leave them all on there?

When you say iPod Tunes, do you mean iTunes Music Store? As in, you obtained your music by downloading music from the iTunes Music Store?
If so, then they will be in ACC Protected format, so they aren't, to start off with, even in MP3 format, so they won't be played by a CD/DVD drive that can play MP3's

Yes you can copy the files from your machine to a DVD/CD to back them up, but as said, they will not be in MP3 format, so they will just be a backup.

I agree with Tony about getting an external hard drive and then setting that to be your music folder. If you have to reformat your computer, you won't lose the music on that disk.
