Landing in a crosswind.
Wow.
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/39256/crosswinds/ This one is hilarious. Remember when Top Gear used a 747 to blow over a car? Well this is the same, but with people! http://www.aviationexplorer.com/747_...aarten_sxm.htm |

Even more amazing when you see it's the 777 which isn't exactly a small bird at the best of times.
|
Again not firefox friendly :(
grrr Mart |
Amazing clips!
My mate who's a BA captain always says that landing in crosswinds combined with heavy rain really make him work for his money and are a real adrenalin buzz. After seeing those clips I guess I'd better stop taking the piss out of him being an overpaid bus driver :) Gary. |

In actual fact crosswinds are a normal part of operating an aircraft although aircraft do have a maximum crosswind limit for landing depending on the basic aircraft design. Swept wing aircraft find it a bit more of a problem since the wind can easily lift a wing during the early part of the landing roll.
There are two distinct ways of tackling the landing, either crabbing in to wind as was shown in the videos, or keeping the into wind wing low with opposite rudder applied to keep the aircraft flying straight down the runway. This method at least puts the centre line of the fuselage a bit more in line with the runway and the direction of travel. You do land on one wheel this way but the second wheel soon touches down anyway. The Canadians used to favour this method. With the crabbing method it is necessary to straighten the aircraft as much as possible with the runway by using the rudder just before touchdown, you can see that in the videos, the bloke at Lisbon did not get that bit quite right and floated up before touchdown which was basically whiy he had to overshoot. If you land with all that much crabbing or drift, it will skin the treads off the tyres very quickly. At the moment of touchdown you would apply aileron as required to prevent the into wind wing from lifting and call for spoilers to kiil as much lift as possible anyway. Its a bit more work over a normal landing and the expression is that it makes you earn your flying pay for the day. :) Les |
