VF37 t/scroll vs VF23 vs VF22
I know compressor maps are scarce for these turbos but does anyone have a clue which one will have a higher power potential on a WRX 2.0. Mid range urge is also important
With the t/scroll it will get a complete header setup from a spec c with sump etc if I go with the vf22 or vf23 it will get hks headers and uppipe. other mods are HKS Racing suction 3 inch turbo back exhaust Aquamist 2d APS fuel rails walbro fuel pump sti pink injectors HKS EVC boost controller which route would you choose and why ? |
The VF22 is a BIG turbo, and it also depends how much power your after?
If you can get the VF36 from the Spec C, that would be handy ;) roller bearing low friction over the sleeve bearing VF37 (but im bias as ive a VF36 as standard ;)) Tony:D |
What about a TD05.
Good for 350bhp and more robust than the VF series. |
My preference would be a TD05H 20G but I dont have one, I have the VF37 and 22/23 avail and trying to decide which to fit
anyone want to swop ? |
Presuming you have the tools to remap I'd say the twin scroll.
In a newage STi with no remap (other than that of a UK importer to cope with the lower octane rating of UK fuel) and a 3" exhaust with highflow cat, run in 4th gear, I see 1bar by 2850rpm and 1.5bar by 3150rpm. Peak torque, of approx 335lb/ft, is produced at 4200rpm with 280lb/ft being available through to 5800rpm. A remap would see a much broader torque curve. |
To add.........I'd also expect an adjustment of the cam timing to see full boost a little earlier.
|
I appreciate there are various states of tune concerning a TD05, but for a comparison have a look at the hybrid TD05 and a VF36 (from my Spec C) in the Stage 1 Engine article (in the official scoobynet article forum).
All add's to the mix for discussion..... and I know which setup I would prefer! ;) http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/images/sn.../test9vsuk.jpg The better figures are the twin scroll. Regards, Shaun. |
Are those graphs from the same car?
|
Mo,
Nope. It's a Spec C Vs a Newage UK STi. Perhaps not a definitive comparison though. Regards, Shaun. |
140bhp drag losses  did you have your tyres at 15 psi ?
What model was the TD05 hybrid ? I have an overlay of VF37 against a TD04 hybrid in similar state of tune, makes interesting viewing ;) |

The bottom curve is drag.
|
Andy,
I have yet to see any TD05 turboed 2ltr that has better lowdown response and power than a VF36 turbo'd 2ltr, along with comparative peak BHP figures..... regardless of who's RR is being used. The above graph was a true comparison regardless of the given drag losses...... the figures would of been as comparitive (showing the same differences) had it been on another rolling road, since the figures gained from my car on another RR (DD) were very similar...... and then of course it was tried on another RR (a different DD one) at which point the car was climbing out of the rollers (no other cars on the day managed that) proving very difficult to gain any sort of power reading. Of course..... you can always run your WRX Project car up against my Spec C (even in it's current cheapo state of tune) on a set of rollers........ but perhaps that wouldnt make interesting viewing (well not in your favour) ;) :D Regards, Shaun. |
Shaun
I had grown out of the "dyno queen" scene some years ago when I realised it was pretty meaningless with regard to how fast the car is on the road or track. If however you can bring yourself to emerge into the real world of on road acceleration then I'm more than happy to run my mildly tuned WRX against your spec C Andy |
how will my hybrid VF37 compare ????
|
Steve, your twin scroll hybrid will be a step ahead of the TD05 and the Std VF36 or 37

Andy andy sounds good to me, the idea of being a ball bearing turbo is much better :) |
Then you will be a step ahead of Shaun :D
|
nice little add once mapped and R&R'd ;) considering i will be saying where i got it from
|
Lateral then ?
:p |
Andy,
One for you that you may know ;) Whats the turbo on the S203? Tony:D |
Not sure Tony.
No Steve, the turbo is not via Lateral. Andy |
Andy,
You must of just regressed then, since you just commented about a "meaningless" drag figure! ;) :D Don't worry, I didnt buy a Spec C to hide behind RR printout's. ;) And it will be thrust in to the "Real World" in 06, once the track preparation stuff has been finished (which is well on it's way), as that is ultimately what the car will be used for. There is plenty of life and scope in these twin scroll's yet..... the first batch of development hybrids for me to test should be ready in Jan/Feb to hopefully lift the bar. Should be interesting! ;) Until I have exhausted several area's of twin scroll development/testing, only then will I consider single scroll units. If the development work does not deliver, then other avenue's will be looked at, but unless you test and try you will never know for sure. Right now though a standard VF36 is capable of doing exactly what it claims...... excellent lowdown response, good torque and good power! ;) Personally I am waiting for a classic owner to have a working twin scroll setup at the same level as I currently have..... in my opinion that car would be unbeatable as a every day beast on the road! Regards, Shaun. |
As I reported elsewhere, I have been periferally involved in an early Classic WRX with a Twin Scroll which did 348 bhp and 384 ft/lbs on a conservative set of rollers earlier in the week. This makes a very fast cross country transport.
This was without mega mods. I am now looking forward to the next Twin Scroll to see if this is representative of their potential. |
Harvey, was that a VF36, V37 or VF42?
Regards Iain |
Be interesting on a classic but won't the AVCS considerably aid the Twin Scroll turbo?
|
Rather than give you duff info, I will check tomorrow and get back to you Ian.
|
if its the one at pauls its a VF37
|
PE 1825 which is a VF36 Hybrid.
Thanks for your e-mail response Ian. |
Anyone fitted a GT32 in proper twin scroll configuration on a Subaru? Other big twin scroll options? Would be nice to get GT30R style shove working with a built 2.5/Spec C heads/manifold.
