Difference in Manifold (Equal or not?)
 

I want to get a new manifold but I am not 100% sure what I should be looking at. I have found the following 2.

Equal length:

What is the difference, apart from a massive price hick! How much difference will it make from the standard one?

Any advice would be great.

Equal, more efficient, more power and torque (can't put an exact figure on it, but I think it's between 15-25bhp and similar torque gains for headers alone), but you loose the scooby burble

Unequal, less efficient, cheaper, you get to keep the wonderful burble.

the unequal length ones in that pic are cheap rubbish. See AndyF's WRX project in the last few issues of scooby mag as they fell apart pretty quickly. Go for Gruppe-S or GT-spec ones for around £400. These are copies of the HKS ones but a heck of a lot cheaper.

GTspec have a 3 bolt uppipe flange which is better for sealing.

if you are still on a smallish turbo at sub 320bhp you are probably best doing something with the standard headers. The tubular ones in the pics will make it spool up a few hundred RPM later, and the top end gains will be outwieghed by this.

There is a small chance i need to replace mine very soon to get it through the MOT. won't know till i get it on the ramp though.

without question you should speak to Mark at lateral performance if you are aftre a set of headers.

I am not convinced that there is a big difference between the performance of equal and unequal length headers. The theory makes a lit more sense when there isn't a whopping turbine wheel in the way.

In theory with equal length you can have a tuned resonance which will suck out the gas from the cylinder at certain rpms to give you more power at those points, but with a turbo ramming in fresh charge anyway, I don't believe you will be fully able to appreciate these gains.

Of course once exhaust back pressure exceeds boost pressure it would be nice to have tuned headers doing what they can to reduce exhaust pressure, as every little bit helps.

My main consideration would be buying some that are well made and wont fall apart. For that, as I said, give lateral a call.

Graham, there was a group buy going on for either Gruppe-S or GTspec on here, and Gruppe-s advertise in that forum as well.

I have Gruppe-S on mine,Very good quality, lovely sound, and the GT spec are pretty much identical.

whatever you do dont buy megan. do a search for some of the names on here and you will soon find out what a lot of people are running.

I can vouch for the gruppe-s headers as well(v2)

I bought them on here on a group buy(still may be on if you contact them direct)..Pricewise i think everything included it came to around £360 to my door which included a helix flexi up-pipe + customs..
Quality wise i would definately give a big thumbs up to and sound wise they are awesome..

You could also keep your OEM headers .. get them ported and wrapped ..
