think I might have some broken bits... need advice!

Hi,

Now three weeks into imported '94 WRX ownership, and think I need to get a few things looked at:

  • Power delivery not smooth when engine pushed hard. When I floor it in first, the car usually makes two or three 'lurches' to the red line, as tho it's not breathing properly. Similarly, when I start the car from cold (normally at the second time of asking) the idle flucuates between 1200 RPM (assume that's normal for start up), but then settles randomly between 400rpm and 1000rpm after a blip, and sometimes stalls again. From looking at previous posts, this sounds like a MAF problem - if so, how much will it cost to replace? (bear in mind I have no intention or ability to do this myself!). Also - any opportunity to upgrade anything when replacing?

  • Clutch could be slipping.. Maybe its just the turbo lag, but sometimes I get the impression when driving hard that the clutch slips a little between 2nd to 3rd, and 3rd to 4th especially. How long do they last on a normal classic WRX? And how much to replace. Suspect I won't like the answer to this one...

Thanks for the help..

Had my MAF replaced a couple of weeks ago and it cost me £84 plus an hours labour. This included the rolling road.....

Have a receipt for a new clutch also which came to £1500 but did include a new 5th gear.... Probably looking at £800-£900 for a clutch replacement.... and thats if you go for a Subaru one!!!!

Sorry for the bad news

A MAF change is a 5 minute job ;) You'll need a flat screwdriver for the 90 degree rubber hose and a 10mm spanner to disconnect it from the airbox and that's it :)

Clutch is an unknown quantity but should cost somewhere in the region of £450 fitted.

Has the car had a full service since you got it?

According to the seller, yes. Although now not so sure...

Any recommendations for a good place to get the MAF done, and also a decent rolling road session? Work in Newbury in the week, and either Bristol or London at the weekends.

And how long do clutches last typically? At 500 quid, i can always kid myself it's not really slipping at all... for now!

There is no answer to the question of how long clutches last because it's down to the driver, the way they drive, where they drive, hill starts etc.

MAF on a 94 WRX? Isn't that too early a model for MAF problems?

No scoob is too old for MAF problems ;) The older models have stronger MAFs but they can still break :(
