Topping Up Oil

Alright Guys,

Not long bought the car and i'm looking to top up the oil, its a Bugeye WRX... what oil should i use seeing as i don't know whats in there?

I've got 5w 30 magnatec sitting here from a previous car, think that is ok for now and then further down the line i can do a change to fully synth?

Cheers
Chris.

Hello mate,

You may get mixed responses on this, however if you PM Oilman he'll give you definitive guidance and, if needed, will be able to flog you the correct Oil at a competitive price.

(I'm only bigging him up because he's been so helpful to me in the past)

Cheers

J

Check on the bottle first for the Magnatec 5w-30, is it ACEA A1 or A3?

If it's A1 then it's not really up to scratch for your scoob. If it's A3 then that's a bit better but this oil is not a proper synthetic.

If the car is pretty stock and used on the road then I would recommend a decent 5w-40 synthetic. A decent one will also allow you the track excursions as well.

The ACEA Specs are as follows:

A1 Fuel economy petrol
A2 Standard performance level
A3 High performance and/or extended drain
A4 Reserved for future use in certain direct injection engines
A5 Combines A1 fuel economy with A3 performance

I recently had my 1000 mile service on my MY05 WRX

When I picked up the car, I asked which oil I should use to top up and was told 10w-40.

I said should it be synthetic and was told, no, use semi-synthetic.

Is this OK?

Its the MINIMUM quality required.

I personally would not use anything other than a 5w-40 fully synthetic if the car is driven hard.

Best not to use fully synthetic until engine is run in a bit more, say around 4-5 thousand miles. Semi synthetic is the right advice for a new engine.
