Anyone had a BMW 318i (143bhp 2001-2005?)

Looking at the newer 2.0litre 143bhp model.

Anyone had one? Is it fairly quick (0-60 in 9 seconds sounds respectable), quiet on the motorway?

What MPG do these return on a run as it would be used for the work commute?

Any known problems?

Thanks!

Get a 6 cylinder man :D

bmw isn't bmw without it

My mate has one, it's not exactly something you want to buy if you are wondering about performance figures (if you see what I'm saying). Also they sound like a cheap ford on tickover, it's the 4cyl sound, doesn't sound right coming from the bonnet of a nice looking bmw coupe IMO

Would love a 6-cylinder, but it'll be doing over 25,000 miles a year, so cant really justify the fuel cost :(

Ive read the newer 318i's with the 2.0 engine are excellent - should average just shy of 40mpg (hopefully more on a motorway run), and meant to be very smooth.

Interested to know what sort of MPG you get in the real world tho - surely someone has/has had one of these?!

318, slow slow slow. Sorry, but it is. If your not bothered about driving it and seek a mondeo 2.0 or vectra replacement then fine, but expect anything more in performance and you'll be disapointed.

As a note of comparison 325 auto in real life will average 35mpg on the motorway and 27mpg in the city. A manual or 320 (2.2 6pot) is obviously better on fuel.

If MPG is really your issue I strongly suggest a 320d in preference to a 318. Especially with your expected mileage. It also is slightly quicker.

Totally agree here with Ali's comments

I had regular use of a 318 for nearly a year. It was vastly underpowered, depends what you are going for really. If your bothered about performance, then the 318 isn't for you. The diesels are ment to be very good tho, performance wise and economy wise. I'm not sure what the 318 does mpg wise, I didn't have to pay the fuel, so didn't pay much interest, but it must be mid to late 30's i'd have thought. I've now got a 330ci sport, and that returns an average of 30mpg.

Spot on!

Also they can be given a cheeky re-map for some decent go.
